Understanding Skin Undertones
Skin undertones are an important part of your overall complexion, but it can be challenging to determine what your undertone is, especially when it's competing with your general skin tone and overtones. Fortunately, we talked to makeup artists and color analysis experts to understand more about skin tones, undertones, overtones, and how to identify yours:
- Makeup artist Yuka Arora explains that "skin tone is your shade, or how light or dark you are. Your undertone is the color under your skin color. For example, when it's really late at night, and you turn on a luminescent light in the bathroom, you can see the undertone of your skin pop. For myself, I look green...You can be the same amount of light or dark as someone, but your undertone could be different."[1]
- Master color analysis consultant Anqi Xue notes that "your undertone never changes. That invisible coloring is something you're born with, but overtone...shifts. Overtone means that, in the summertime, some people tan a lot, and then the same type of people that tan a lot could get really, really light in the wintertime."[2]
- Color analysis expert Anoushka Dannin says to "try to figure out your undertone...[by asking], 'Does white-white make me look my best, or does an off-white make me shine a little bit more?' Which one do you feel more comfortable in? Or, maybe just see, 'Does my natural lip coloring look better in white or off-white?' And then you can kind of gauge whether you have a warm or cool undertone."[3]
- Makeup artist and stylist Frankie Sanderson says that "you want to make sure the concealer or powder you're using matches your skin. You have cool tones and warm tones, and then you have things that are in between, like neutral-cool or neutral-warm...Oftentimes, people will get the wrong color. Let's say you're a pink undertone and you get a neutral... It's going to look yellow on your skin."[4]
