How do you read a diamond grading certificate?

The certificate lists the 4 C's of a diamond, which stand for the cut (or shape), carat (or weight), color, and clarity of the stone. The cut is the shape of the stone. The rating grades the proportions of each cut, ranging from excellent down to poor. Carat is the weight of the diamond when it's weighed on a scale. Color starts at D, which means colorless, and as it goes down the scale it starts getting down to L and N, where you see yellow coming into the diamond. Further down, you'll start seeing bright yellow-colored diamonds. Finally, clarity describes the number of inclusions, or imperfections, in the stone. Most diamonds have some inclusions, which were caused when they were formed billions of years ago.

How can I get my diamond certified?

The main way to get your diamond certified is to visit or ship your diamond to the Gemological Institute of America, or GIA. The diamond will have to be removed from the setting by a trusted jewelry, and the GIA will send you a full grading report within a week or two.

How can I check the authenticity of a black diamond before I buy it?

Take it to a local jeweler in your area. They will have a tool that can be used to check diamonds.
