School can be tough. We won't deny it, and it ain't always easy to keep on top of things. Even the best students slip now and then, and that's why we asked scholastic experts for tips on how to get a handle on classes before they get a handle on you:
- Academic tutor Ted Coopersmith, MBA, says, "Students should of course pay attention in class and work promptly on class assignments; however, the most learning probably occurs when a student questions the materials in front of [them] and then continues on that line of inquiry. This will lead to greater absorption of the concepts being taught as well as independent thinking."[1]
- Coopersmith adds that "Most students can improve their GPA by increasing their study time and decreasing their extracurricular activities, particularly when these activities cut in study and project time. Give yourself some weekend leisure awards, then gradually return to study mode by the end of the weekend at a minimum."[2]
- School counselor Ashley Pritchard, MA, says that to be a good student, you should strive to be "organized, self-motivated, disciplined, [a] good self-advocate.... That goes back to asking for help when you need it, recognizing when you know something's not right or you need help. Those, I would say, are the most important qualities."[3]
- Academic tutor Jake Adams recommends that students plan their weeks as much as possible, but that they don't sweat it too much if that plan starts to change or sway, encouraging us to think, "I have to do the best that I can in any given circumstance."[4]
- Academic tutor Jennifer Kaifesh says, "Talk to your teachers to better understand why your grades don’t reflect your knowledge and/or effort... Also, be sure that you aren’t leaving easy points on the table by failing to turn in assignments (or turning them in late). Class participation is another category that many teachers consider when calculating a final grade. More than anything, convince your teachers that you truly want to understand the material, not that you just want a better grade—teachers are more likely to round up and offer extra credit to students who seem to truly care about the class."[5]
