Cultivating Main Character Energy

Someone who has "Main Character Energy" lives their life as the protagonist of their own story. This means that they have the self-assuredness and magnetism that you'd usually see in the fictional main character of a movie, TV show, or book. We talked to image consultants and communication experts about living life with confidence and charisma, and here's what they had to say:

  • Certified image consultant Sheila A. Anderson says open, energetic body language can make a big difference when it comes to portraying confidence. "Examples include smiling, making direct eye contact, leaning in toward others as you talk to them, and using expressive hand gestures," she says.[1]
  • Life coach Sandra Possing agrees on the importance of confident body language, and she suggests a fake it until you make it approach. "Even if you don't feel confident, you can straighten out your spine. You can drop your shoulders down and back. You can open your chest, you can hold your head high. It will make a huge difference!"[2]
  • Communication and leadership coach Dr. Jeffrey Bogaczyk says kindness and respect are also key. "People respect people who respect them," he says. He recommends having "a posture of kindness and graciousness towards peopleβ€”not being submissive or putting yourself below people, but coming to them and approaching them on an even power dynamic."[4]
  • Etiquette and Professional Presence Coach Toni Purvis says, "Confidence is something you exercise. The more you do it, the more confident you become. So, you do have to get outside of your comfort zone, and you do have to stand up to that fear. You do have to stand up to that thing that might be hindering or holding you back, and the more you do that, the more confident you become."[5]
