Should you stick to your "type" when dating?

In general, most people do have a "type" when it comes to dating, meaning they tend to be attracted to similar personality traits and physical features in others. [1] However, a person's type definitely isn't set in stone! Many people end up in relationships with partners who are very different from those they've dated before, and some people truly don't have a type at all—they're attracted to all kinds of traits and characteristics.

In this quiz, we help you figure out whether you have a type or not, and what exactly that type may be. But is it a good thing to have a type? Or is it better to branch out? We checked in with wikiHow's dating experts for their insights on having a "type," and here's what they had to say:

  • Matchmaker Abby Rosenblum explains that it's okay to have a type when it comes to serious dealbreakers, but you should try to open your mind about the more minor things. "It totally depends on what you're being picky about... it's okay to be picky about the things that really matter to you, but it's not to be super picky about the superficial things... your future partner could be someone who maybe does not check all the boxes that you're looking for."[2]
  • Dating coach David Kornel Z lists religion, whether they want to have kids, political opinions, and big lifestyle choices like willingness to travel or being a vegan as the types of things that would be reasonable dealbreakers when determining someone's type.[3]
  • Relationship coach Luis Congdon says to take a look at your friendships if you're not sure what your romantic type is. "What I would recommend to anybody who's interested in dating is take a look at some of your best friends and some of the people that you love being around the most. Think about what it is about those people, and connect with those feelings that you have with those people...because those feelings and those qualities and characteristics of all those relationships are probably what you're looking for in a serious relationship."[4]
  • Dating coach Lisa Shield recommends giving people who don't fit your usual type a chance, especially if there's enough chemistry there to pique your interest. "All of the women that I worked with who find true love, they all will say, 'He's so different from anyone else I've ever dated. It's just not it's never been like this.' And sometimes, what's really blocking us isn't physicality or whatever—it's that we're afraid to open up to real love... I just know so many women who are now in loving relationships with people that they weren't first attracted to."[5]
  • Dating coach & matchmaker Laura Bilotta agrees that dating outside your type can be a good thing and cautions against comparing them to your exes. "Everyone has their unique qualities, and in order to stay open when dating new people, you need to appreciate people for who they are and all that they bring to the table... It doesn’t make sense to compare someone new to someone who ultimately wasn’t the right person for you."[6]
  • Celebrity dating coach Damona Hoffman explains that being more open to different kinds of people can help you find the right partner. When she gets her clients to expand their preferences, "Usually what I see is that it opens up more options, and people are like, this person was right here," she says.[7]
  • Dating coach & matchmaker Louie Felix says not to get too caught up in finding someone 100% similar to you (even though this is usually one of the factors that determines someone's type). "I firmly believe that opposites sometimes do attract. So, if you're more of a reserved person, and you're with somebody who's not, who's much more confident and outgoing, I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing... You should always open yourself up to the possibilities."[8]
