Living with ADHD
This quiz may be all fun and games, but ADHD isn't always a laughing matter. Sure, it's fun to make memes and jokes, but sometimes we'd rather just have some help, you know? That's why we talked to mental health experts to give you top tips for living with ADHD:
- Licensed clinical psychologist Hilya Tehrani, PsyD, says, "People often think ADHD means not being able to pay attention. And really, it's better to think of it as variability in attention...Going along with ADHD is often what we call executive functioning challenges, [things] like planning, organizing, managing your time."[1]
- Licensed psychologist George Sachs, PsyD, reminds us that "ADHD is a motivation Deficit Disorder, it's not an attention deficit disorder, it's a motivation problem."[2] He recommends focusing on the why of doing things, not the how, when you need to make yourself do something.
- Life coach Rahti Gorfien, PCC, says, "Sometimes I suggest people do a time tracking log. In other words, every half hour you stop and make a record of what you did...you can look at it and determine how much of your time is going where."[3]
- School psychologist Laura Reber, SSP, says that when tackling a task, "As much as you can, do one thing at a time... I would say the biggest favor you can do yourself is set yourself a time that you're going to study...and just limit your distractions."[4]
- Board-certified brain health physician Michael Lewis, MD, MPH, MBA, says that a balanced diet and regular exercise can go a long way when it comes to managing ADHD.[5]
