Being More Authentic

It can be hard to be real in a world that seems to be telling us to make ourselves into someone else most of the time. What is authenticity, really? Can anyone be 100% real? Well, we talked to life coaches and counselors to help you be your best self, and not someone else:

  • Life coach Taylor Rochestie says that a huge part of being authentic and discovering who you are is simply asking yourself, "Who am I? What do I want?"[1] Take the time to really do some thinking and introspecting!
  • Therapist Ebony Eubanks says, "If someone is struggling to be their true self [around someone], I would ask them, why do they feel like they have to be an imposter with this person? And what is it about the person that makes you feel that you cannot be you?"[2] She encourages us to pinpoint where our perception falls short with reality, and ask ourselves why that is.
  • Life coach Michelle Shahbazyan, MS, MA, says, "If you want to be true to who you are, look inwards, sit in a moment of peace and clear away that almost tangible noise that's in your mind and in your body. Get it cleared out and open up an empty space where you can start filling it with things that you want and the way that you feel."[3]
  • Image consultant Elle Monus says, "Likeability comes down to authenticity and openness... The openness I’m talking about is truly listening to others with empathy while reserving judgment and accepting them exactly as they are."[4]
  • Licensed counselor and psychotherapist Ira Israel says that simply being present and alert in a social situation "will lead to greater authenticity because you'll be able to fully focus on the experiences, conversations, and interactions you're having in the present."[5]
