What does tuff mean?

Tuff Meaning
Slang expert Tobi Nwodo tells us that "tuff" is used to "describe someone cool. So, like, 'This guy's tuff,' or like, 'That was a tuff move.'"[1]


Tuff Origin
Most slang these days comes from AAVE, or African American Vernacular English, and that includes tuff, but with some extra context. It's a play on the term "tough," and has its roots in the classic novel The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton, in which the greaser characters would call each other "tuff" as a sign of masculinity and respect. The word was then picked up by Black online communities and brought into the mainstream, especially by NBA accounts and streamers.

Then, in 2024, X user Wzy442 tweeted a TikTok screenshot showing rapper Osamason, with a comment that says, "Bro the way he smile actually so tuff." This caption inspired a new meme format where people replace "smile" in the original caption with other actions, using the format to comment on their favs, both genuinely and ironically.[2]
