Mood Ring 101
Mood rings are pieces of jewelry that are meant to change color and reveal your mood based on your body's temperature. They were invented by Josh Reynolds and Maris Ambats, and the pair started selling them in American stores in 1975. The rings were an instant hit, and by the end of the first year of sales, they'd raked in $20 million.[1]
How do mood rings work? The original mood rings contained "thermotropic liquid crystals," which were meant to change color based on body temperature in order to determine one's mood.[2] There isn't any scientific evidence to back up this claim, so you should take any mood ring readings with a grain of salt.[3] Regardless, they're a pretty fun and nostalgic piece of jewelry, and they tend to look pretty darn cool, too!
