Am I Bigender?

And what does bigender mean, exactly?

When someone is bigender, they identify with two or more genders. Sometimes they're those genders at the same time, and sometimes they switch. It falls under the non-binary umbrella, and it's related to genderfluidity, but it's not quite the same!

So we're here to clarify the difference and help you figure out if the bigender label is right for you. Just answer a few simple questions, and we'll tell you if we think you're bigender, or something else!

Finding Your Gender Identity

They say gender is a social construct, but that doesn't mean it doesn't matter, or even that it doesn't exist. Even social constructs affect us, after all! But it does mean that gender can be whatever you make of it, and that finding your gender is a journey for many of us. We talked to gender and sexuality experts for tips:

  • Transgender and diversity specialist Inge Hansen, PsyD, defines some terms for us: "Gender identity is our internal experience and naming of gender, while our gender expression is how we present our gender through clothing, behavior, personal appearance, and other characteristics."[1]
  • Licensed social worker and LGBTQ+ identity expert Zoe Stoller takes some of the pressure off: "The cool thing about gender identity or the way we feel about ourselves and the way we label it with those words is that it can be very different from the way that we present ourselves... you can present in whatever ways feel best to your body... you get to decide how you feel about that perception in relation to your identity."[3]
  • LGBTQIA+ activist and educator NV Gay agrees, and adds, "The big thing I tell people all the time is that both gender and sexuality are fluid. They are ever evolving, they are ever changing, and it really all depends upon who we interact with in our lives."[5]
