Exploring Your Gender Identity

Gender identity can be as complicated or as simple as you want it to be. It's mainly a way to discuss your experience in a gendered world, and the ways you fit or don't fit into the preconceived molds. We talked to social workers and counselors about how to explore and appreciate your own unique identity:

  • Transgender and diversity specialist Inge Hansen, PsyD, explains that "Gender identity is our internal experience and naming of gender, while our gender expression is how we present our gender through clothing, behavior, personal appearance and other characteristics. Both of these are separate from sex, which has to do with anatomy and chromosomes."[1]
  • LGBTQIA+ activist and educator NV Gay says, "You know, in a perfect world, how I always would say that exploring one's gender or sexual identity is very much like trying on outfits... Very much gender is the same way. You might be able to look at something and say, 'yes, that's who I am, that's who I'm going to be,' but until you try it on, until you walk around and say, 'Does this feel right?' you're not necessarily going to know."[2]
  • Licensed social worker and LGBTQ+ identity expert Zoe Stoller says, "My biggest piece of advice would be to think about how your mind and body feel in reaction to being placed within whatever strict societal gendered box and role you are placed in... just notice that discomfort and see if that leads you anywhere."[3]
