Exploring Your Gender Identity

According to LGBTQIA+ activist and expert NV Gay, being transgender just means that you're a different gender than the one on your birth certificate, no matter if you've always felt that way or if it's a more recent discovery.[1] It's totally natural, and nothing to be afraid of! That's why we talked to LGBT and gender experts to help you figure out what your gender is and what it means to you:

  • LGBTQ+ studies expert, public speaker, and spiritual guide shawndeez, PhD, says, when exploring gender, to "give yourself space" to start asking questions that might at first seem scary, like, "Do I actually feel at home in the gender that I was assigned at birth?... Usually if you're already looking that up, the answer is probably not."[3]
  • Transgender & diversity specialist Inge Hansen explains more about dysphoria, a common experience among trans people: "Gender dysphoria is a sense of discomfort or dissatisfaction with one's assigned gender or sex. Sometimes it centers around certain body parts... and other times it is more focused on the roles, behaviors, or general appearance associated with one's assigned gender. If you notice persistent discomfort with multiple aspects of your assigned gender... you may be experiencing gender dysphoria."[4]
  • NV Gay tells us not to "force an identity," but rather to "let the identity find you." Be patient, and see what feels best.[5] You can pick up and put down labels as you like. There's no single right way to discover yourself!
