X/Twitter and other social media websites are a great place to connect with other people, read news, and find entertainment. However, they can be distracting when you have other things to do. Luckily, it’s pretty easy to block Twitter/X on most devices. You can use third-party apps and web browser extensions, or the settings menu on some devices. This wikiHow article teaches you how to block Twitter/X on Android, iPhone, iPad, Mac, and on most web browsers.

How to Block Twitter/X

You can use third-party apps, like BlockSite, to block specific apps and set a focus mode. BlockSite also has a web browser extension you can install on most web browsers. On iPhone, iPad, and Mac, you can block Twitter/X using the Screen Time settings in the Settings menu.

Using Android

  1. BlockSite is a free app you can download from the Google Play Store on Android. It’s also available for iPhone, but its functionality is a little more limited. You can block X using the Settings menu on iPhone and iPad. Use the following steps to download and install BlockSite.
    • Open the Google Play Store or App Store.
    • Search “BlockSite.”
    • Tap Install or GET next to the BlockSite app.
  2. You can tap the BlockSite icon on your Home screen or apps menu, or you can tap Open when it is finished downloading in the Google Play Store.
    • You may be prompted to sign up for a premium subscription. If you don’t wish to sign up, tap the X icon in the upper-right corner. Then tap Skip to limit version at the bottom of the screen.

  3. It's the second tab at the bottom of the screen. It’s next to an icon that resembles an hourglass. You can use this option to block an app for a set period of time.
  4. To do so, tap the button that says Open Settings at the bottom. Then tap Installed Apps. Tap BlockSite and tap the toggle switch to allow BlockSite to block different apps.
  5. It should be in your list of installed apps. You may need to scroll down a ways to find it.
  6. Tap the hours and minutes boxes and enter how long you want to block X. Then tap Done. This will block X for however long you entered.
  7. It’s the third tab at the bottom of the screen. You can use focus mode to add a variety of apps to a list and block them for a preset time period.
  8. To do so, tap the plus (+) icon next to Twitter/X.

  10. You can enter how many minutes you want to block X, as well as how long you want to schedule breaks.

Using iPhone or iPad

  2. You’ll need to tap this option in order to enable app limits.
  3. This option looks like an orange hourglass icon. You can limit how much you can use your apps here.
  4. This will open a new page titled "Choose Apps," and show you a list of all the categories you can limit.
  5. This will display all your social media apps, including X. Tap the arrow icon to the right of the Social icon.
  6. Tap the radio option next to “X” and tap Next at the top.
  7. Swipe up and down on the hour and minute rotary dials to set the timer. This will set a time for how long you want to block Twitter/X.
  8. If you want to schedule X to be blocked on specific days, tap Customize Days below the time. Then tap a day you want to schedule. Swipe up and down on the rotary dials to adjust the time for each day. Then tap the back arrow at the top.
  9. This will confirm your schedule and block X for the time period you set.

Using a Browser Extension

  1. Enter one of the following URLs in your address bar to open the extension store for your web browser:
  2. Block Site is an extension that can block websites and help you stay focused. Enter Block Site in the search bar at the top of the page.
  3. There may be a few extensions called “Block Site.” Look for the one that has an icon with a red shield that has a circle with a line through it on the front. To add the extension, click on it in the webstore. Then click Add Extension, Add to Chrome, Add to Edge, or something similar. Then click Add extension when prompted.
  4. Open X in your internet browser. Type “x.com” into the address bar, and press Enter or Return.
  5. To do so, click the icon that resembles a puzzle piece next to your address bar. Then click Block Site in your list of web extensions.
  6. This adds Twitter/X to your list of permanently blocked sites.
    • To remove a site from your blocked sites, open the Block Site extension and click Change blocked sites or Edit blocked sites list. Click the trashcan icon or minus (-) icon next to the site you want to unblock.
  7. Alternatively, you can use focus mode or work mode on Firefox to temporarily block websites for a set period of time. Use the following steps to add X to your focus mode or work mode list:
    • Open the Block Site extension.
    • Click Change blocked sites or Edit blocked sites list.
    • Click Focus Mode or Work Mode in the menu bar to the left.
    • Enter “x.com” in the list of websites and press Enter.

    • Click Focus Mode or Work Mode.
    • Enter the focus mode time, break time, and number of cycles.
    • Click Start or Start Session.

Using Safari on Mac

  1. To do so, you can click the icon that resembles two gears in the Dock, or you can click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner, and then click System Settings.

  7. There are two lists you can create. The box below “Allowed” is for websites you want to allow through the filter. The box below “Restricted” is for websites you want to block.
  8. This adds X to your list of blocked websites.
