Having Better, Safer Sex

The Rice Purity Test was made by students at Rice University in Houston as a way to compare notes about their spicy, steamy experiences, mostly sexual but some non-sexual. It's not exactly scientific, but it's still a fun (though imperfect) way to think about your sex life. Like the test itself says, a "perfect" score would probably mean you're dead from doing something dangerous, and so it's important to keep in mind that it's not a bucket list. In fact, more important than experience is safety, and that's why we talked to sex experts to help us stay safer and have a better time while doing the birthday suit shuffle:

  • Sex educator Danielle Bezalel tells us, "First and foremost, checking in with your body and mind is essential, and that could mean asking yourself the question, 'Am I ready for whatever sexual act is going to happen?'... 'Do I consent to whatever sexual acts are going to occur by my own free will, not under any influence or coercion?'"[1]
  • Bezalel also explains that "Talking about pleasure is equally important... asking yourself and your partner or partners, 'What sounds really fun to you? What sounds really fun to me? What does pleasure look like in this moment for both of us?'"[2]
  • Relationship expert Maria Avgitidis says, "If you're going to be sleeping with someone for the first time, you should be able to have a conversation about STDs and the consequences of having sex... You should also talk about protection. If you can't talk about these topics, you might not be ready to have sex with that person."[3]
  • Love and relationship coach Nicole Moore says that before you dive into the deep end, "Practice self-pleasure first. Knowing your own body and what you enjoy is a great thing to learn as a teenager so you are empowered in your sex life from a young age to honor your body and ask for what you want."[4]
  • Sex and relationship expert Gabrielle Kassel tells us that, if we want to expand our knowledge of sex, then "seeking out sex education and sex-positive content (podcasts, books, Instagram creators), can open your understanding of what qualifies as sex and pleasure, while also eliminating some of the shame."[5]
