Apple TV is a streaming platform from Apple, launched in 2019. It was previously known as Apple TV+ and was rebranded as “Apple TV” by removing the “+” in 2025.[1] The app was not available on Android phones and tablets until February 2025.[2]

In the Apple TV app for Android, you will not find in-app options to change the appearance of subtitles and closed captions like you do in Netflix or Prime Video. This is because the Apple TV app on Android is designed to rely heavily on the device’s system-level accessibility settings for customisation. On Android phones and tablets, Apple TV uses the caption preferences set in your device’s main Accessibility settings.

In this guide, you will learn how to customise subtitles on Apple TV on your Android phone or tablet, including how to change the caption size, text colour, font, opacity, background, etc.

  1. 1
Open the “Settings” app on your Android smartphone or tablet. It has a gear icon and you can find it in the app drawer. The icon may look different on different devices.
  2. 2
Go to the Accessibility settings. You may need to scroll down to find this option. On some devices, it may be inside “Additional settings”.

  3. 3
Tap on Caption preferences. This option can appear in different places depending on the Android skin. It is usually found under the “Captions” section.
    • On Samsung phones, go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements to find the “Caption preferences” option.
  4. 4
Tap on the Caption size and style option. You can usually find it below the “Show captions” toggle.
  5. 5
Change the caption size. Tap on Caption size and choose the font size you want. On Samsung phones, this option is called “Text size”.
  6. 6
Change the caption style. Tap on the Caption style option. A pop-up box with different caption styles will appear. By default, it is set to “Set by app”.
  7. 7
Customize more settings. Tap on the Custom option in the “Caption style” menu to access more caption customization options.
  8. 8
Change the font style. Tap on the Font family option, view the available fonts, and select one by tapping on it.
  9. 9
Change the text colour. Tap on the Text colour option and scroll to see more colours. Do not forget to choose a readable text colour.
  10. 10
Change the text opacity. Tap on the Text opacity option and adjust it as needed.
  11. 11
Change the edge type for better readability. Tap on Edge type, which is located next to the “Text opacity” option. Options like outline, drop shadow, and raised can improve readability while watching a film or show.
    • To change the edge colour, tap on “Edge colour” under the “Edge type” option and choose the colour you want.
  12. 12
Add a background colour. To add a background colour to your subtitles, choose a colour from the Background colour option. Make sure it matches well with the text colour.
    • You can also adjust the background opacity using the “Background opacity” option.
  13. 13
Add a caption window if needed. Tap on Caption window colour and choose a colour if you want to enable it. You can also change the window opacity.
    • It is usually better to leave this option set to none or default, as it can negatively affect your viewing experience. If you have already enabled a background colour, adding a caption window is not necessary.
  14. 14
Check the subtitles in the Apple TV app. Launch the Apple TV app and open any title. Enable subtitles by tapping the subtitle icon, which looks like a conversation box. Enable subtitles by tapping the subtitle icon, which looks like a conversation box, then select a language from the subtitles menu. That is it!
    • If you do not like the caption style, you can always change it from the caption settings. To return to Apple TV's default caption style, select the “Set by app” option under “Caption style”.

Warnings

  • When you change the caption style in your Android system settings, it does not affect only the Apple TV app. Other apps, such as YouTube, will also follow the same caption settings.
  • Apple TV gives Pluribus a yellow font for captions as an Easter egg. You cannot change the colour for this specific title, but you can still customise captions in other ways mentioned above.[3]
