Stranger Things may be over, but the characters will live on in our hearts forever—which is probably why a viral ST personality test has taken over the internet! This in-depth, lengthy, psychological personality quiz will give you a list of Stranger Things characters, as well as percentages to tell you how closely you match each person—from Dustin and Steve to Max and Robin. Keep reading for everything you need to know about how the match list test works, how to take it yourself, with insights from pop culture commentator Corey Andrew. We’ve also included a list of some other Stranger Things quizzes you can take when you’re done.

How do you do the Stranger Things match test?

Pop culture commentator Corey Andrew says to go to this site and click “Begin assessment.” Answer each question by moving a slider between two personality traits to identify where you sit on that spectrum. On the results page, select Stranger Things in the “Universe” dropdown and scroll down to see your match list.

How to Do the Stranger Things Match List

  1. Go to the Psychometrics Project website and click “Begin assessment.” The first thing you need to do is to find the correct website (there are dupes out there!) that other people are using to create their match list. By following this link, you should land on a page called the Open-Source Psychometrics Project, with the header “Statistical ‘Which Character’ Personality Quiz.” When you’re ready to begin the quiz, scroll to the bottom of the page and click “Begin assessment.”[1]
    • If needed, you can read the instructions for the quiz on this page (but we’ll also guide you through the steps ourselves).
    • The page doesn’t say anything about Stranger Things!? That’s okay! This is actually a generic personality test—once you complete the entire test, you’ll be able to personalize it to Stranger Things characters (and we’ll tell you how to do that—so keep reading!).

  2. Andrew explains, “You answer 36 questions about your vibe, like how shy you are, how you deal with conflict, whether you’re more ‘let’s talk it out’ or ‘hand me a bat,’ and who you’d realistically be friends with in real life.”[2] Move the slider based on your personality and how much of each of the opposing traits you possess.
    • For example, maybe one side of the slider says “sarcastic” and the other says “genuine,” and you’re usually genuine with a rare sarcastic side. In that case, you might move the slider toward the genuine side to land at 85% genuine and 15% sarcastic, or something similar.
    • Once you’ve completed each question, click “Next.” Continue until you’ve completed all 36 questions in the test.
    • You can also click “[skip question]” if you don’t understand the words or are finding it too difficult to answer. However, skipping too many questions may lead to your results being less accurate.

  3. After completing the quiz, the site will ask you whether you’d be willing to take a brief, optional survey to rate characters and improve the accuracy of the test. If you’d like to do this, click “Yes, do optional survey (3-5 minutes),” then click “Continue.” If you’d prefer to skip the survey and get your Stranger Things match list immediately, click “No, get results immediately,” then click “Get results.”
  4. Now that you’re on the results page, you may see a random character that’s NOT from the world of Stranger Things. Don’t worry! All you need to do is to find the dropdown on the left side of the page that says “Universe: [All].” Click on “[All]” and scroll down until you see Stranger Things. Select Stranger Things from the menu.
  5. Now, you should see a large photo of the Stranger Things character you’re most like, as well as a graph of their traits versus your traits. But, if you want your complete Stranger Things match list, scroll down a little further until you see “Complete match list.” You’ll either see your match list there, or you’ll need to click “Start unlock” to take a quick survey. Once you’ve clicked onto the survey, you can exit it to see your complete Stranger Things match list!!
    • If you’re confused about what your match list means, it basically lists the characters you’re most like from top to bottom. So, you’re most like the character at the top of the list, and least like the character at the bottom of the list. You’ll also see the percentage that you’re similar to each character.
      • For example, if one item on your list reads “Mike Wheeler (Stranger Things): 44%,” that means you’re 44% similar to Mike Wheeler!

How does the Stranger Things match list test work?

  1. The test is very detailed and contains 36 questions, with each question featuring a slider between two opposing adjectives or personality identifiers. For example, you might see a slider between word pairs like “orderly” and “chaotic,” “obedient” and "rebellious," or “blue-collar” and “ivory tower.” On each question, you’ll want to move the slider to identify where you fall in this spectrum. For instance, maybe you’re mostly obedient with a slight rebellious streak—in this case, you’d want to move the slider to sit closer to the “obedient” side.
    • Once you’ve answered all the questions, the test will calibrate your results and tell you which character from the Stranger Things universe you’re most like.
    • Andrew says, “The test compares your answers to statistical personality profiles of the Stranger Things characters: Eleven, Steve, Max, Dustin, etc. and then goes, ‘Yep. This is who you are or who you would be in Hawkins.’ No supernatural powers required.”[3]
    • They’ll also use a percentage to tell you how alike to that character you are—e.g, your personality is a 88% match to Steve Harrington’s personality.
    • You’ll also get a “Complete match list," which reveals how well you match with each character, from your highest match to your lowest one.
    • Is the test accurate? It’s hard to say whether the test is perfectly accurate, but we can say that it’s reportedly based on scientific and psychological research, rather than your typical online personality quiz. Also, the quiz isn’t actually specific to Stranger Things—after answering the questions, you can see which characters you’d match to in a whole bunch of different universes and fandoms![4]
