In this article, we’ll do a deep dive into Dramione, including what it is and why it’s popular. We’ll also list some fan-favorite Dramione fanfics and books inspired by the ship.

What does “Dramione” mean?

Dramione is the ship name for Draco Malfoy and Hermione Granger from Harry Potter; it’s a combination of their names. Many Dramione fanfiction writers enjoy writing enemies-to-lovers stories, in which they start out hating each other but slowly fall in love. Manacled by SenLinYu is one of the most popular fanfics.

Section 1 of 6:

What is Dramione?

  1. Many fandoms, Potterheads included, read and write fanfiction in which two characters fall in love, regardless of how they feel about each other in canon. Dramione is one of the most popular ships in the Harry Potter fandom, and the word is a combination of Draco and Hermione’s names.[1]
    • Dramione fanfics may take place in the world of Harry Potter or in an AU (alternate universe) which is completely separate from the wizarding world.
    • Often, other Harry Potter characters make appearances, as well.
    • In most stories, Draco and Hermione start off hating each other and slowly fall in love over the course of the fanfic.
    • Dramione is so popular that many well-known fanfictions are being reworked into published novels.

Why is Dramione so popular?

  1. In the Harry Potter books and movies, it’s clear that Draco and Hermione do not get along. However, many fanfic writers see their canon relationship as the perfect opportunity to develop an enemies-to-lovers story, in which the characters start out hating each other but slowly fall in love over the course of the story.[2]
    • Dramione stories are also often include a redemption arc for Draco, which many fans wanted in the actual Harry Potter books. Draco recognizes his prejudiced past and works to become a better person, which creates a satisfying character arc.[3]
    • Draco and Hermione also have contrasting personalities, which makes for an interesting relationship dynamic. Fans often enjoy stories in which the “bad boy” falls for the “good girl.”
    • “There’s a huge following with the Hermione and Draco [fanfiction],” says Harry Potter content creator Hector Garcia. “I feel like lots of people would have rather seen Draco and Hermione together than Ron and Hermione.”[4]
Section 3 of 6:

Where did the ship come from?

  1. The exact origins of the ship are unclear, as many fans claim to have written the first Dramione fanfic. However, the ship gained a lot of traction while fans waited for the later Harry Potter books to be released.
    • JK Rowling supposedly once said that she considered a romance between Draco and Hermione, but this may only be a rumor, as there are no credible sources online confirming this.
    • Emma Watson, who played Hermione in the Harry Potter films, also admitted to having a crush on Tom Felton, who played Draco. This could be another reason many people began shipping Draco and Hermione.

Popular Dramione Fanfics

  1. Manacled is a dark, dystopian fanfic in which Voldemort won the war and killed Harry Potter and most of Hermione Granger’s other friends. Hermione is imprisoned and discovers she lacks many memories from the war. She and the other witches are forced into a breeding program, and she is given to the High Reeve, Draco Malfoy, as a surrogate to produce a child and repopulate the wizard population. Along the way, she begins to unlock her hidden memories and discovers her relationship with Draco was deeper than she originally thought.[5]
    • Note: Many popular Dramione fanfictions, including Manacled, deal with dark and mature themes. Be sure to read all content warnings before diving in.
  2. Like Manacled, The Auction takes place in an alternative timeline in which Voldemort won the war. Hermione Granger is captured by the Death Eaters and sold to the highest bidder, Draco Malfoy, in an auction of Order members and sympathizers. What follows is a dark and intense romance that explores themes of power dynamics, survival, and forbidden love.[6]
    • Since The Auction has been reworked into a published novel, the fanfiction is no longer available online. Some people have it downloaded, though, so you may be able to find it if you ask around in fandom communities, like on Reddit.
  3. In Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love, Hermione Granger is a healer and medical researcher on the verge of making a big discovery. Draco Malfoy is an Auror assigned to protect her from forces unknown, and neither of them is happy about it. This is a slow burn, enemies-to-lovers romance.[7]
  4. Breath Mints / Battle Scars is set during Hermione and Draco’s eighth year at Hogwarts, as they return to finish their education after the defeat of Voldemort. While the two never got along, they are now both traumatized by the war and begin to understand each other in ways they never thought possible.[8]
    • This fanfiction has been taken down from the internet, but you may be able to find it floating around somewhere if someone downloaded a copy.
  5. Secrets and Masks is set 9 years after the Battle of Hogwarts, in an alternate universe in which the war drags on. Hermione, the Order’s most lethal soldier, is captured by Draco Malfoy while on a rescue mission. She is held prisoner at Malfoy Manor, where she is subjected to Draco’s horrific torture methods and discovers the dark secrets of the war.
  6. The Fallout follows the relationship between Hermione and Draco after Draco defects to the Order of the Phoenix during the Second Wizarding War. Hermione, isolated from her friends, is initially hostile towards Draco, but because they’re often in the same place at the same time, their relationship slowly develops into a romance.
  7. Set after the war, Remain Nameless follows Draco Malfoy as he grapples with his mental health and healing journey. He begins meeting Hermione for coffee, and they form a tentative friendship that slowly blossoms into a romance.[9]

Books Inspired by Dramione Fanfiction

  1. Alchemised is the published version of Manacled, with all references to Harry Potter removed. Hermione is now Helena, an alchemist taken prisoner after her Resistance friends have all been murdered in a war against the necromancers. When her enemies discover her memory loss and believe she is hiding vital information, she is sent to live with the High Reeve, Kaine Ferron (originally Draco).[10]
    • The overall plot is the same as Manacled, though there is less emphasis on the breeding program, as that aspect was inspired by The Handmaid’s Tale.
    • Fanfiction cannot be published and sold because the fanfic writer does not own the rights to the world or the characters, so everything related to that IP (intellectual property) must be changed.[11]
  2. Rose in Chains is based on the fanfiction The Auction. After her brother, the heir to the throne, dies in battle with the dark forces of Bomard, Briony Rosewood (Hermione) is captured by her kingdom’s enemies. She is stripped of her magic and auctioned off to the highest bidder, Toven (Draco), a high-ranking Bomard and her long-time infatuation.[12]
  3. The Irresistible Urge to Fall for Your Enemy is inspired by Draco Malfoy and the Mortifying Ordeal of Being in Love. Osric Mordaunt (Draco) is a member of the Fyren Order of assassins and is in dire need of healing. The only healer who can help is Aurienne Fairhrim (Hermione), a member of the enemy order. The two begrudgingly work together to heal Osric and investigate the mysterious recurrence of a deadly pox while trying to ignore their developing attraction toward each other.[13]

Where to Read Dramione Fanfiction

  1. Archive of Our Own is by far the most popular fanfiction site. Fans from all over the world post their own Dramione stories, and there are currently over 36,000 fics tagged “Hermione Granger/Draco Malfoy.” Other popular fanfiction websites include Tumblr, Wattpad, and Fanfiction.net.
    • Note: It is illegal to buy or sell fanfiction. If you see someone attempting to sell a bound copy of a fanfiction, do not buy it and report the listing. Selling fanfiction is a form of copyright infringement, as fanfiction writers do not own the characters or world they’re writing about.[14]
