What is Entity 404?

Minecraft expert Jose Rivera explains that Entity 404 refers to a mysterious entity with pale skin and glowing red eyes. It is said to crash your game and spawn in dangerous mobs. Its origin is unknown; some stories say it’s a God, others say it’s a villager that became a god, and one even says it’s a neutron star!

Who is Entity 404 in Minecraft?

  1. Rivera says, “Entity 404 is one of Minecraft’s most popular creepypastas, a mysterious being said to corrupt game files and crash entire worlds. Its design and behavior vary depending on the story, but most fan accounts describe it as a pale humanoid with glowing crimson eyes, appearing in bugged or “error” worlds that constantly crash or display ‘404’ code warnings.”[1]
    • “Across all versions,” Rivera says, “[Entity 404] travels with a signature mark ‘404 Not Found,’ turning the familiar into the uncanny, blending mythology and programming horror into one unforgettable symbol.”[2]
  2. Rivera says Entity 404 is sometimes portrayed as a fallen programmer spirit. “In one fan series, The Legend of Dave the Villager, Entity 404 is actually Professor Hector, a villager scientist who experiments with the Aether dimension and becomes corrupted by its power, evolving into a digital demigod who destabilizes worlds,” he explains.[3] Professor Hector realized he could use the life force of his fellow villagers to become a god, so he gathered villagers in the Aether, stole their life force, and gained godlike powers.
    • In this story, as Professor Hector became Entity 404, he took on a group of fellow professors and players. Although he was hard to defeat, one of his fellow professors deleted the Aether code and destroyed Entity 404.

  3. According to Rivera, Entity 404 is sometimes “portrayed as a godlike glitch, resembling a cosmic anomaly.”[4] One Creepypasta in “The Eternal Repository” claims Entity 404 is a neutron star that is both a celestial body and an ancient being with a woman’s voice. In this iteration of the story, Entity 404 is linked to Null, has a powerful magnetic field that changes its being from a magnetar to a neutron star depending on the strength output, and produces massive amounts of energy that can restrain Null.
    • In this iteration, Null is known as Null-06, a black hole that is eternally linked to Entity 404.
    • Entity 404’s voice only emerges when someone is close to it. Although it shows no signs of life or consciousness, it’s still suspected to be alive and autonomous.
  4. Rivera says, “Another popular retelling casts Entity 404 as a primordial creator gone wrong, a being that forged oceans and caves before being ‘deleted’ from existence, who is now haunting Minecraft’s code as a cosmic error.”[5] In YouTuber Faberistry’s video, “The Story of ENTITY 404,” Entity 404 is described as an ancient Minecraft god that created the in-game universe. He was said to summon the oceans, carve out the plains, summon a beacon of light in the sky that we’d go on to know as the sun, and build extensive cave labyrinths–the same ones we play in today.

Is Entity 404 real?

  1. Rivera says Entity 404 is not real and not in the base version of Minecraft. “Entity 404 doesn’t exist in Mojang’s official files, mob list, or updates,” he explains. “There’s no legitimate spawn command, egg, or world seed tied to it.”[6] There have been various mods that let you download Entity 404 into your world over the years. In these mods, your world slowly starts acting weird, unknown blocks start to spawn, and things start to glitch.[7]
    • Rivera explains that these “mods, data packs, and edited maps recreate Entity 404 with scripted scares, including crashes, red-tinted lighting, corrupted textures, and sudden jumpscares. These fan-made add-ons simulate the ‘infection’ effect the legend describes.”[8]
    • Rivera says that while “Entity 404 isn’t technically real, it’s emotionally real to fans, [and] its existence is shaped through shared fear, storytelling, and community creativity.”[9]

How long has Entity 404 been around?

  1. According to Rivera, “The ‘Entity 404’ concept first surfaced in the mid-2010s, growing out of the same community that birthed Herobrine and Entity 303. Early creepypastas mentioning ‘Error 404’ or ‘Code 404’ date back to around 2017–2018, when YouTube horror channels and Minecraft forums began circulating screenshots of red-hooded or glitch-textured mobs appearing in corrupted worlds.”[10]
    • One of its earliest appearances was in August 2017, when it first appeared in Logdotzip’s YouTube video, “Entity 404 CRASHED my game.” In the video, Logdotzip says the legend of Entity 404 has been around since before then, shouting out fellow Minecraft YouTuber JujuStyle7 for introducing him to the Entity.
    • Rivera says, "YouTubers like Logdotzip helped popularize the myth through horror-themed videos showing fake crashes and ‘encounters,’ which blurred the line between fiction and gameplay."[11]
    • “According to community timelines, Entity 404 likely solidified as a distinct myth by 2018,” Rivera continues, “thanks to creators like JujuStyle7 and Logdotzip, whose viral videos featured ‘world not found’ messages and game crashes allegedly caused by the entity. From there, the legend evolved into a key pillar of Minecraft’s horror canon, thriving through fan games, wikis, and TikTok ‘found footage’ recreation videos.”[12]
