Have you ever wondered which national flags feature animals on them? It turns out, a lot of flags include one or more kinds of animals in their designs. We talked to global flags expert Tareth Peacock to help us put together this list of flags with animals, along with what each flag looks like, the origin of the flag’s design, and what the animal(s) in each flag symbolize.

The colors represent Andorra’s connection to France (blue/red) and Spain (yellow/red). The coat of arms on the yellow stripe includes 2 red cows in the bottom right quadrant as symbols of the historical Viscounts of Béarn, France. Peacock says that cattle also reflect the pastoral tradition of Andorra.[3] In particular, they’re known for the unique Bruna d'Andorra breed of cows.[4]

Cayman Islands

  1. The blue flag contains the Union Jack in the top-left corner and the coat of arms in the outer portion. The flag depicts a lion to symbolize the UK, along with 3 green stars on blue and white waves for the 3 islands, a turtle, referring to the islands’ original Spanish name, “Las Tortugas,” meaning “The Turtles,” and a pineapple.[9]
    • The pineapple is associated with neighboring Jamaica.
    • The motto, “He hath founded it upon the seas," represents British heritage and island life.

The grouping of animals highlights the connection between these 3 historic regions.[10]

    • The larger Croatian coat of arms sits on top of the red, white, and blue tricolor flag; it is itself a shield with 5 smaller shields to stand for Croatia, Dubrovnik, Dalmatia, Istria, and Slavonia.

This parrot is Dominica's national bird, as well as a symbol of "flight toward greater heights.” The 10 green stars stand for hope and the country's 10 parishes.[12]

Peacock says the Andean condor symbolizes strength and protection.[15] It may also represent the readiness to defend the nation, in addition to Ecuador’s national wealth, the sea, and independence.[16]

The eagle represents courage, strength, sovereignty, and Arab nationalism. The eagle holds a scroll with "Jumhuriyat Misr al-Arabiya,” which means “Arab Republic of Egypt” in Arabic.[18]
    • According to Peacock, the Eagle of Saladin is a historic emblem of power and Arab nationalism.[19]

  1. The flag has 3 vertical stripes (one white and 2 light blue), plus the national coat of arms located in the center of the white stripe to stand for the 2 oceans and land in between. Peacock says the emblem includes the resplendent quetzal, the national Guatemalan bird, which represents liberty and independence.[24] It appears alongside crossed rifles and swords as symbols of defense and honor, a laurel wreath (victory), and a scroll with the date of Guatemalan independence: September 15, 1821.[25]

Kazakhstan

  1. The blue and yellow flag symbolizes peace and features a golden sun right of center as a sign of life, energy, and prosperity. Underneath the sun is a golden steppe eagle flying with its wings outstretched. Peacock says that the eagle signifies freedom and the country’s open plains.[27] Along the left side of the flag is a vertical gold ornamental pattern called a "koshkar-muiz,” referring to “ram's horns” as a symbol of Kazakh culture.[28]

  1. The flag has a red upper half with a golden Frigate bird flying over a rising sun with 17 rays. The Frigate bird is a symbol of the Kiribati islands as well as freedom. The flag’s blue lower half includes 3 white wavy stripes to symbolize the Pacific Ocean and the Gilbert, Phoenix, and Line Islands.[29]
