How to Figure Out Your Greatest Strength

Identifying and honing your strengths can help you gain more confidence and reach your fullest potential. We consulted wikiHow experts for their advice and insight when it comes to figuring out your talents and skills, and here's what they had to say:

  • Life Coach Adrian Klaphaak, CPCC, recommends looking outward and inward to discover your strengths. "Ask people you know well and trust from your personal and professional life to give you feedback about what they see as your core strengths," he says. Then, "Reflect on your life and work and identify a few experiences when you were in the flow. These are the moments when your innate strengths were coming through."[1]
  • Life coach Sixu Chen advises, when assessing your strengths, it's helpful to ask yourself questions like, "What am I naturally good at? What makes me forget about the passing of time? What things come effortlessly for me?"[2]
  • Master certified coach Katie Stolp says, "Start by noticing what lights you up—what you enjoy, what feels natural, and what people often thank you for. If you’re stuck, ask people you trust to share what they see in you. Sometimes we need to step outside our own heads to see what’s already there. Once you’ve identified your strengths, ask: How can I use these in a way that feels meaningful to me? Maybe it’s bringing more humor into your relationships, using your empathy in your work, or leaning on your persistence when things get tough."[3]
  • Developmental psychologist Leslis Bosch, PhD reminds us that we're all different when it comes to our skills and talents. "Everyone has a unique set of strengths. This is very beneficial because people with different strengths can work together to accomplish something more than any single individual could accomplish," she says. "It’s important to recognize your strengths and how you can apply them in any given situation. That way, you always recognize the value that you bring to any situation."[4]
  • Klaphaak adds that building up your strengths is more effective than trying to eliminate your weaknesses, and it also leads to more professional achievement. "When people align their work with their strengths, they are happier and more successful," he explains.[5]
