  1. Happy Meat Farms (HMF) appears to be a normal corporate farm that prides itself on animal welfare. Even though their website seems legit at first, it’s part of an alternate reality game (ARG) with multiple clues and puzzles to solve that reveal the company’s true, evil intentions.[1]
    • Happy Meat Farms and the “Don’t Feed the Muse” ARG were created by YouTuber and filmmaker Alex Bale in 2020.
    • Happy Meat Farms has important lore and context for “Don’t Feed the Muse,” but most of the ARG’s storyline focuses on videos posted by Alex Bale and other YouTubers like Conspiracy Carl and “The Cynical Critic” (Mark).

  1. Happy Meat Farms was a real farm that was taken over by evil entities. According to the Happy Meat Farms website, the company was founded in 1998 by a woman named Ramona Bynes. While the company claims it almost went bankrupt in 2014, a mysterious new partner joined Ramona and saved it.[2]
    • The new partner is MOTHER, an evil otherworldly entity that wants total control of the world and requires large amounts of meat to survive.
    • MOTHER starts running genetic experiments on animals and eventually humans in order to feed itself.
    • Ramona is against the genetic testing, but MOTHER captures her and begins experimenting on her.
    • Ramona breaks out of containment and escapes from Happy Meat Farms.
    • Ramona releases conspiracy videos under the name “this place is not happy,” but Happy Meat Farms claims they are promotions for a film called Paradox1313.
    • Ramona tries to destroy Happy Meat Farms with a secret weapon, but is stopped by Jared, the IT worker for HMF.
    • An explosion occurs at Happy Meat Farms, and the company claims it was a promotional stunt for a new movie called The Meat Paradox.
    • MOTHER is moved to a remote forest in Florida and continues to survive.

Alex, Mark & Carl’s Storylines in the “Don’t Feed the Muse” ARG

  1. Alex Bale is a YouTuber who started posting SpongeBob conspiracy theory videos on his channel. At the end of the third episode in the series, it’s revealed Alex feeds raw meat to a mysterious, shadowy creature he calls a “Muse” in exchange for new conspiracy video ideas.
    • Alex expresses to his Muse that he wants to stop making SpongeBob videos for a while, but his Muse persuades him to keep making them for more popularity. The muse invades his home and asks for even more raw meat.
    • In episode 6, Happy Meat Farms is listed as one of the video’s sponsors. After the video, Alex gets a new cat, but his Muse eats it to grow more powerful.
    • Alex’s friend Victoria comes over, and he panics about her seeing his Muse. She reveals that she has her own muse.
    • Alex passes his Muse on to his friend Wesley, and Victoria claims Alex is now safe.
    • Alex is captured by Victoria, who has been possessed and assimilated with her Muse.
    • Alex’s Muse transforms to look like Alex, and it consumes him.
    • Alex breaks free from inside his Muse, causing it to explode.
  2. 2
Mark’s storyline Mark, also known as “The Cynical Critic,” is another YouTuber who posts negative reviews of popular movies. While his channel seems like it’s not related at first, hidden details in his videos reveal that he’s also part of the ARG.
    • In his first video, the door in the background opens by itself, and there are missing posters for his friend and former YouTube partner, Anthony.
    • Screenshots of Mark’s email appear on screen, showing that his mother has been denied health insurance, and he ordered a large amount of raw meat.
    • Mark makes a response video to a horror short Alex Bale made, and black droplets are seen dripping out of a ceiling vent in the background.
    • Mark releases a video sponsored by Happy Meat Farms with a new co-host, Antonio, who reveals personal details of Mark’s life. Mark acts strangely, revealing that he has been given a Muse.
    • In the channel’s final video, it’s revealed that Mark keeps his Muse instead of passing it along, and that Mark accidentally killed Anthony. Mark is captured by his Muse, and black goo drips from his nose in the final frames.
  3. 3
Conspiracy Carl’s storyline Conspiracy Carl is an online conspiracy theorist who is convinced that a hidden agency is secretly taking over the world. Conspiracy Carl is first introduced in Alex Bale’s video descriptions, but he also posts videos on his own website.[3]
    • Carl states that he’s worried about being followed and spied on when he’s at his job.
    • Carl mentions that his videos are getting more popular, and text reflected in his glasses says, “PHASE ONE COMPLETE. HOST SHOWS NO RESISTANCE. INCREASE HIS POPULARITY,” implying he’s been infected by a Muse.
    • Carl responds to Alex Bale’s SpongeBob conspiracies, and his outfit and lighting setup change in between cuts.
    • Carl reveals that he is Mark’s father and that he planted a Muse spore in Mark’s apartment when he was under its control.
    • Carl calls out Happy Meat Farms and says that his wife (Mark’s mother) got sick when she ate HMF meat. He vows to take them down.
    • Carl’s final post shows him delivering a secret weapon to Ramona so they can take down Happy Meat Farms. The video ends with him saying he’s completed his mission.
      • Unfortunately, he doesn’t know that Ramona failed and MOTHER was able to escape.

How do you play the “Don’t Feed the Muse” ARG?

PDF download Download Article
  1. Explore the Happy Meat Farm website. While the Happy Meat Farm looks pretty normal on the surface, there are lots of hidden images, codes, and pages to discover if you poke around. One notable example is a deformed cow with the word “MUSE” carved into its side, hidden behind the video on the home page. Take some time to poke around the site so you can uncover all of its secrets.
    • The Employee Access tab requires a password, but you can easily find it on the site. Here’s a hint: watch the intro video carefully and look for a hidden code that looks out of place.
    • If you don’t want to search for the Happy Meat Farms codes, access these pages by entering the following passcodes:
      • Employee Portal: ZX159G

Will there be more updates to Happy Meat Farms?

PDF download Download Article
  1. No, it’s unlikely that new updates are coming. In 2024, Alex Bale posted all the “Don’t Feed the Muse” ARG clips into a single video, calling it the “Full Webseries.” There haven’t been updates from any of the related YouTube accounts since then, so the ARG seems like it’s completely finished.
    • There’s a chance there are still hidden details, codes, or pages on the Happy Meat Farms site, but online sleuths have already uncovered most (or all) of the information.
