LGBTQ+ culture expert NV Gay explains the significance of this iconic line from Heated Rivalry
PDF download Download Article

You might already know that Heated Rivalry is…everywhere, but what’s all this stuff about cottages? And what does it have to do with this massively popular show about rival hockey players and closeted romance? Well, we partnered with an LGBTQ+ culture expert to help explain what “I’m coming to the cottage” means, both within the context of the show (and on the internet) and as a nuanced metaphor. To the cottage we go!

SPOILER WARNING: This article includes major spoilers for Heated Rivalry season 1.

What does “I’m coming to the cottage” mean?

LGBTQ+ culture expert NV Gay says in Heated Rivalry, “I’m coming to the cottage” is spoken by Ilya, who’s decided to join his long-time secret situationship, Shane, on a trip to his cottage. The line marks a turning point in the couple’s relationship, where they (finally!) become more vulnerable, open, and committed.

“I’m Coming to the Cottage” Meaning in Heated Rivalry

  1. Heated Rivalry centers on two rival professional hockey players, Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanav, who navigate their romantic feelings for each other while remaining closeted and not in an official relationship. For nearly a decade, the pair carries on a secretive and tumultuous tryst, marked by private meetings, endless text messages, and a noted lack of meaningful communication (and an unwillingness to admit their genuine romantic feelings for each other). However, this begins to change when Shane is injured and, in his pain medication-addled state, asks Ilya to come stay at his private cabin retreat in rural Canada.[1]
    • Initially, Ilya doesn’t respond, but expresses surprise and skepticism at this shift in their outwardly “casual” dynamic.
    • However, Gay says that things change when Shane and Ilya witness rival player Scott Hunter share a public kiss on the ice with his romantic partner, Kip Grady, after a championship win.[2]
    • As Gay explains, the kiss is a major milestone not just for queer representation in hockey, but for Shane and Ilya, who finally see that a romantic relationship might actually be possible for them.[3]
    • Immediately after seeing the kiss, Gay says that Ilya calls Shane and tells him, “I’m coming to the cottage.” This refers to Shane’s earlier invitation for Ilya to spend the offseason at his private cottage.[4]
    • By agreeing to go to Shane’s cottage, Gay explains that Ilya is finally accepting Shane’s vulnerability and signaling that he is ready to pursue a deep, intimate, and “real” life with him, rather than keeping their connection strictly hidden and sexual.[5]
    • In the next episode—which is also the season finale—the couple does go to the cabin, admit their feelings, solidify their relationship, and even come out to Shane’s parents.[6]

“I’m Coming to the Cottage” on Social Media

  1. Ilya telling Shane, "I'm coming to the cottage" was a pivotal (and emotional) moment in the TV show, so fans have taken to quoting the line in TikTok and Instagram posts to show their love for the series and reference the famous scene.
    • For example, this Instagram post by @producerliz jokingly references the line, writing “I’m coming home for christmas < I’m coming to the cottage” and “hey can everyone comment what they’re bringing to the cottage next week I’m running to Costco on the way for coke and ginger ale.”
    • "I'm still in the cottage" has also become a way for fans to express that they're still emotionally in the world of the series and unable to stop thinking about it, as seen in this Instagram reel by @garretts_library.

Is “I’m coming to the cottage” a metaphor?

  1. Beyond its literal meaning and its significance within the plot of the show, “I’m coming to the cottage” is thought to represent a common experience within the LGBTQIA+ community. That is, people in queer relationships—especially closeted queer relationships—often feel the need to seek out some sort of sanctuary. Due to the continuing prevalence of discrimination against queer couples, many seek private havens to be able to be truly themselves and fully express their feelings for each other. They can kiss, hold hands, flirt, and fully relax into the relationship—without having to worry (so much) about prying eyes or hateful attitudes.[7]
    • Within the context of Heated Rivalry, “the cottage” is both a literal destination and a safe space where the two lead characters—who are famous professional athletes—are able to develop their relationship away from the public eye.[8]
    • The cottage is also a symbol of commitment and vulnerability within the show. When Ilya agrees to come to the cabin, he seems to be expressing a willingness to dive deeper into the relationship, open himself up, and give up the safe but restrictive rules they’ve been playing by (get it?) since they first got together.
    • As Gay explains, “While some might assume ‘going to the cottage’ is just slang for a casual hookup, the context of the story proves it means something much deeper. It signifies moving past a physical-only arrangement and ‘taking things to the next level’ by committing to a romantic relationship.”[9]

  1. The novel, written by Rachel Reid, was released in 2019. The plot detailed a romantic relationship between two professional hockey players (Shane Hollander and Ilya Rozanov) who navigate a secret, decade-long tryst amidst external pressures, societal taboos, and internal conflicts. The book (which is the second in Reid'sGame Changer series of gay hockey romance novels) was adapted into a TV show in 2025 by Jacob Tierney for the Canadian network Crave.[10]
    • Since its release, the show has exploded in popularity and quickly become a massive cultural phenomenon, being praised for its emotional depth, passionate intimate scenes, and powerful depiction of queer experiences.
