What is the “It’s very important that you” TikTok trend?

  1. “The ‘it's very important that you’ trend on TikTok is a trend where creators address their past selves and offer life advice and specific instructions from the present moment,” says Faraz. “Videos start with the phrase ‘it's very important that you’ and then are followed by guidance that urges the creators' past [selves] to make a decision, trust their instincts, or take a certain risk in order to benefit their [lives],” Faraz continues.[1]
    • The decision or risk the TikTok user made can be super small or dramatic and major. For example, the TikTok user might urge their past self to go to the university where they’ll meet their best friends, or switch their career so they find their passion.
    • People usually share videos or photos of themselves before and after the decision with text that follows this format: “In your 20s, there will be a [blank]. It’s very important that you [blank].”[2]
    • Most videos use the same TikTok audio by @luvkacchan, which is a mashup of Billy Joel’s “Piano Man” and Fleetwood Mac’s “Silver Springs.” Both songs are introspective and slightly melancholic, which adds to the emotional weight of this trend and the wistfulness of looking back in time (though this trend is mostly positive!).
      • Lindsey Buckingham, a member of Fleetwood Mac (and the inspiration behind “Silver Springs”), even posted a TikTok of the “It’s Very Important That You” trend that uses the audio!

Variations on the Trend

  1. Some people use the “It’s Very Important That You” trend to reflect on advice that they’re glad they learned in their earlier years. While the poster may have had to go through heartbreak, discomfort, or other negative situations, they’re ultimately glad that they’ve grown from them.
  2. Some TikTok users take the “It’s Very Important That You” trend in a more negative way to share warnings or advice they wish their younger self had taken. Instead of their decision leading to something positive, it ended up not being the best decision in the long run.
  3. Not everyone takes the “It’s Very Important That You” trend in a sentimental or introspective way! Some people share choices they made that led to funny situations, or simply share decisions they’re glad they made, but maybe didn’t change their whole entire life (like decorating choices).

How to Do the “It’s Important that You” Trend

PDF download Download Article
  1. Take some time to get a little introspective about your life and what brings you joy in it, whether that’s something “big,” like your relationship, friendships, or career, or something “small,” like your fashion sense or favorite snack. Then, think about how this joy came into your life: did you move cities, change jobs, take a class, or have a fun night out with your friends? Try to pinpoint a single decision you made that led to this positive change in your life.[7]
  2. For instance, if you met the love of your life on a solo trip, you might show yourself taking off in the airplane, and then you and your partner together. Or, if you discovered a song that changed your life, you might post a photo of yourself browsing records in a record store and then include a picture of the band.
  3. Whether you post a video or slideshow, use the “In your 20s, there will be a [blank]. It’s very important that you [blank]” format to complete the trend. For instance, you might type something like, “In your 20s, you’ll have the opportunity to travel to Japan. It’s very important that you go on this trip,” or “In your teens, your friend will invite you to a Lorde concert. It’s very important that you go.” Then, simply add the audio by @luvkacchan!
    • Feel free to play around with the text format as you need. For instance, it’s okay to phrase the beginning like, “When you are 19,” “During sophomore year,” or “One day you will.”
