PDF download Download Article

Vampires are creatures with a long and complex mythology. There are, however, a few basic rules that never change. It's part of what makes them vampires. If you intend to include vampires as part of a novel, or as part of cosplay or role-playing, you should know the basic rules for killing them off. We spoke to horror content creator Sydney Bermudez to teach you the most common ways to kill a vampire in a fictional work. We’ll also explain how to kill them in a roleplay session and more unique killing methods you may not have heard before.

How do you kill a vampire?

Horror content creator Sydney Bermudez says some classic vampire weaknesses include sunlight, holy water, garlic, silver, and wooden stakes. They can also commonly be destroyed by decapitation or fire. Make sure your characters have access to the tools required to kill the vampire.

Killing a Vampire in Fiction

  1. Your audience needs to know that your character is a vampire. You can state it outright, or, if you want to be more subtle, give clues so your readers (and characters) can discover the vampire. To build mystery and suspense, it’s better to show that the character is a vampire rather than stating it outright.
    • You must consider your vampire’s powers to know how to best defeat them. Bermudez says, “In most folklore and media, vampires are known for supernatural strength, speed, heightened senses, immortality, and the ability to heal quickly.”[1]
    • To make your work stand out, ignore or modify certain character traits of the vampire. Unpredictability can be a good thing in fiction. Just make sure you explain these changes to your audience at some point.[2]
    • Your vampire shouldn’t be indestructible. If the vampire is the hero and can’t die, there won’t be much suspense. If the vampire is the villain and can’t die, then you have given your heroes an impossible task, and the story will only end in failure.

  2. Your character may not need to kill the vampire right away, especially if he is the main villain. Your hero needs to be able to keep the vampire away while they look for what is necessary to kill it. Some ways to ward off a vampire include:[3]
    • Holy objects: Vampires are evil creatures, so they’re often repelled by sacred items, like a cross or a Bible. They also resist sacred and religious places, like churches. These do not have to be Christian, however, and can be from any religion as long as the person wielding them has faith in them.
    • Counting small objects: Traditionally, vampires will obsessively count objects they come across, so dropping something small in large amounts can delay them and allow your hero to escape. Things like rice, sand, or oats work well. They may also count the knots in a fishing net.
    • Certain plants: Sometimes, vampires are repelled by plants that symbolize new life, such as roses, holly, or hawthorn. Other traditions use plants like buckthorn, juniper logs, blackthorn, or rowan. Your character can display these in their home or carry them around.
    • Invitations: Bermudez says, “Many depictions also show that vampires must be invited into a home before entering.”[4] Your hero could hide out in their home and refuse to allow the vampire to enter.

  3. One good way to kill a vampire is by cutting off its head, says Bermudez.[5] In some genres, the mouth is then stuffed with garlic to prevent the vampire from coming back.
    • Sometimes, the head and body then need to be burned to prevent the vampire from regenerating.[6]
  4. 4
Drive a wooden stake through its heart. According to Bermudez, a classic way to kill vampires is with a wooden stake.[7] There can be something special about the wood (from a particular tree, or shaped into a holy object, like a cross), or it can just be a sharp piece of wood. Some vampire stories in modern settings use everyday wooden objects like pool cues and coat racks.
  5. Like werewolves, Bermudez says silver can sometimes kill vampires, so shooting them with a silver bullet is a good way to go.[8] If you don’t want to use silver bullets, make sure there is something else special about the bullets, like being blessed by a priest to become sacred objects. In general, the bullet must go through the vampire’s heart to kill it.
  6. Bermudez says many vampires are weakened by holy water.[9] Vampires are usually evil creatures who do not react well to sacred objects. Spraying a vampire with holy water can scald or burn them. You’ll have to decide if the vampire needs to be doused in it, or if just a splash will do.
  7. According to Bermudez, sunlight is a classic vampire weakness.[10] In some traditions, vampires need to avoid the daylight or they’ll turn into dust. In other works, vampires move around in broad daylight without any problems. If you decide to make sunlight fatal, remember that most of your action with the vampire will need to take place at night or in a dark area.
  8. The characters killing the vampire need to be able to accomplish the task, so they need a way to acquire the necessary items. If they need holy objects, for example, your characters may need access to a church or a priest. If their weapons require a certain type of wood, those trees should grow in your setting.

Killing a Vampire in Roleplay

PDF download Download Article
  1. If you’re roleplaying a vampire story, both the vampire and the vampire slayer characters need to discuss what the vampire’s powers are and how it can be killed, so everyone is on the same page. In live-action roleplaying, discuss the “fight” and “kill” scenes in advance to make them look more realistic and to ensure that nobody gets hurt.
    • If you’re roleplaying online, you don’t have to worry about bringing props, so you can kill a vampire however you want. In live-action roleplaying (or LARPing), you’re more limited based on what props you have access to.
  2. Garlic doesn’t necessarily kill vampires, but it can repel them and prevent them from rising again once you do kill them. One of the most effective ways to kill a vampire is decapitation, but since you won’t actually be cutting off anyone’s head during roleplaying, having the garlic around is a good way to demonstrate that you can kill vampires.
  3. Since driving a wooden stake through a vampire’s heart is a traditional way to kill them, a stake is one of the best props you can have during a vampire roleplay. Carve a real stake if you’d like, or use any sharp, wooden object at your disposal. Just be careful that you don’t actually stab the other person.
  4. Since you’re roleplaying, you don’t need to worry about getting real holy water. Simply find a little bottle and fill it with water. Consider adding a bit of glitter to give it a “special” effect. In some cases, vampires are merely repelled by holy water, not killed, so make sure you know how your vampire player will react.
  5. If you’re portraying a vampire hunter, it’s also a good idea to carry other objects that can slow vampires down, even if they don’t kill vampires directly. These include holy objects like a cross or the Bible, or if your vampire is obsessed with counting, grains of rice or sand.
    • Get creative with it! Since you’re roleplaying, your vampire can be repelled by anything you’d like. Just make sure all the roleplayers are on the same page.

Other Ways to Kill a Vampire

  1. Many nations used wooden bullets as training rounds, though many rumors claim they were meant to splinter inside the victim. This creates the possibility that your vampire could die when one of these splinters pierces its heart.[11]
  2. A flash grenade is a non-lethal explosive device that temporarily disorients targets by producing a bright flash of light and an extremely loud bang.[12] The flash could produce enough light to cause the vampire to disintegrate.
  3. In general, vampires are only repelled by sunlight, but depending on the lore, any time of light could be a weakness. If your vampire doesn’t like light and your character is stuck in the dark, consider using technologies that generate powerful light, like the following:[13]
    • An ultraviolet laser can use concentrated UV rays that create glare. The glare prevents the victim from seeing the direction of the beam, so your character could attack from any angle.
    • A flashlight or battery-powered lantern can be effective if the goal is to use brightness. A military-grade flashlight would likely work best, but you’ll have to decide how powerful or concentrated the light will need to be.
  4. A character’s faith in the power of the cross is more important than the physical item itself. Since it’s symbolic, an item or setting that looks like a cross (such as the shadow of a windmill in the film Brides of Dracula) can also defeat a vampire.

Why are vampires afraid of the cross?
    Community Answer
    Community Answer
It is because of the historical, mythological background of vampires. In some instances, they are believed to be followers or even descendants of the devil. It is the same thing with holy water. "Unholy beings" and holy items don't mix well, to summarize.
