Welcome, Resident Evil fans! If you’re looking for a roundup of Resident Evil’s most terrifying and disturbing creatures, you’ve come to the right place. The Resident Evil series features plenty of things that go bump in the night, including numerous creatures engineered by the Umbrella Corporation as bio-weapons (so, basically, they’re extra scary-looking and dangerous). Keep reading for an in-depth list with key information on each of Resident Evil’s most important and notable creatures!

An Overview of Resident Evil’s Creatures

The Resident Evil series introduces all sorts of horrifying creatures—from zombies (including Crimson Head and Bloodshot) to the Tyrant (and prototypes based on the original Tyrant, including Mr. X and Nemesis). There are also several human mutants in the game, such as Lisa Trevor, William Birkin, and Lady Dimitrescu.

  1. Zombies—in some form or another—are a staple in many Resident Evil games. They’re also more or less the center of the RE universe, and the first enemy ever introduced in a Resident Evil game. In RE, zombies are deceased people afflicted with the “Cannibal Disease,” an ailment originally caused by the T-Virus (and later other strains of the virus, too). They’re encountered in the first three main games in the series—and even after that, there are still plenty of zombie-like creatures (such as the villagers infected by Las Plagas in RE4).[1]
    • First appearance: Resident Evil (1996)
    • Several sub-types of zombies appear throughout Resident Evil, including:
      • Hyper Zombie - A type of Zombie capable of sudden, intense bursts of speed.
      • Modified Zombie - Zombies used as test subjects for Umbrella’s T-Virus research.
      • Graveyard Zombie - Individuals who were infected with the T-Virus and buried alive, or reanimated on the grounds of a cemetery.

  1. Lickers are terrifying mutant creatures that crawl around on all fours, using sound to hunt down prey (since they don’t have eyes). Lickers are named for their long tongues, which they can use to snatch and pull in their prey, and they can also crawl up walls or across ceilings to get the jump on people—including Claire and Leon in Resident Evil 2. They deal a lot of damage, but it’s possible to sneak around them if you’re careful (and silent).[2]

Uber Lickers

  1. Yes, there’s such a thing as an “Uber Licker” in Resident Evil. They’re an evolved form of Lickers from the Resident Evil: Retribution movie, made in the secretive Umbrella Prime facility. These Uber Lickers have been made even more deadly than their predecessors; they’re much larger, with two tongues and no lower mandible. They also have superior strength, though they still rely on sound to track prey and cannot see.

Crimson Head

  1. The “Crimson Head” is a type of zombie mutation caused by certain strains of the T-Virus. Unlike other creatures in the Resident Evil-verse, Crimson Heads weren’t an intentional creation, but rather a surprising effect of the T-Virus on the human body. The strain causing Crimson Head to develop was originally made for the Tyrant Project; before the Spencer Mansion Incident, it was the Arklay Laboratory’s policy to destroy any created Crimson Head zombies.
    • First appearance: Resident Evil (1998)
  1. Listing “crows” as a creature type in Resident Evil might seem a little underwhelming compared to the other entries, but there’s a reason for doing so! In Resident Evil, crows become carriers of the T-Virus strain, and even end up infecting others with it (including S.T.A.R.S. officer Forest Speyer). Both before and after the Raccoon City Incident, crows in the region were exposed to the infection—but didn’t show visible signs of it, making them a subtle danger.[3]
    • First appearance: Resident Evil (1998)

  1. Hunters are human-animal hybrids made by the Umbrella Corporation to be bio-weapons. Made with human, reptilian, and amphibian DNA, Hunters resemble large, bipedal reptiles with scaly skin and frog-like facial features. Of course, there isn’t just one version of Hunter; Umbrella created numerous prototypes, and even after Umbrella’s fall, other bio-weapon manufacturers used their data to make new and evolved Hunters.

Plant 42 and Plant 43

PDF download Download Article
  1. Plant 42 is, essentially, a plant afflicted with the T-Virus, causing the plant to mutate and develop violent, carnivorous traits. Plant 42 specimens can feed on both water and the blood of their human victims, attacking humans with their vines. Plant 43 (nicknamed “Ivy”) is the next evolution: a smaller and more mobile form of the bio-weapon made from data on Plant 42; in Resident Evil, Ivy specimens eventually escape containment and enter Raccoon City’s police station.[4]
    • First appearance: Resident Evil (1998)

  1. Cerberus are an experimental bio-weapon created by Umbrella, named after the guardian of the underworld in Greek mythology. Cerberus are essentially dogs (specifically Dobermans) afflicted with the T-Virus strain, mutating them and resulting in severe skin deterioration, yet also making them much stronger and more aggressive. In 1998, a pack of Cerberus went feral and began attacking hikers in the Arklay Mountains (around the time of the Mansion Incident).[5]
    • First appearance: Resident Evil (1998)
  1. Chimera are an extremely disturbing human-fly hybrid, created by the Umbrella Corporation via gene splicing (and, like the Cerberus, named for a creature in Greek mythology). They have fly-like extremities with a more humanoid torso and skull-like head, though their mouths can stretch unnaturally wide. Although dangerous, Umbrella deemed them too flawed to continue honing as bio-weapons (although S.T.A.R.S. officers still had to contend with several of them during the Mansion Incident).

Regeneradors

PDF download Download Article
  1. Regeneradors are a notoriously terrifying creature from Resident Evil 4, where Leon Kennedy encounters them in an underground laboratory. Los Iluminados creates them by planting multiple Plaga parasites in a single human body—leading to intense mutations that result in a misshapen humanoid creature with grey-black skin, warped limbs, and glowing eyes.
    • First appearance: Resident Evil 4 (2005)
    • Regeneradors are also very difficult to kill, although Leon eventually discovers that he can use a thermal scope to find their (multiple) hearts and destroy them.
    • Once a Regenerador’s hearts have been destroyed, the creature itself can be killed.
  1. “Baby” is a creature lurking in House Beneviento that resembles an enormous, mutated fetus. However, it’s possible that the creature was partially (or entirely) a hallucination caused by the flowers around the house. Regardless, “Baby” is a disturbing creature that uses its arms and legs to pull itself around, and can vocalize similar to a human baby, saying things like “mama” and “dada.” If Baby catches Ethan, it will swallow him whole.
    • First appearance: Resident Evil: Village (2021)

Bloodshot

PDF download Download Article
  1. The Bloodshot are a type of zombie created from the C-Virus, further mutated after being exposed to extreme amounts of damage. As a result, they’re malformed humanoids; their skin is ripped, with muscle and innards showing, and they have mutated heads with gaping mouths and long teeth. Leon, Helena, and Ada must contend with Bloodshot enemies during the Tall Oaks incident, and they were used as bio-weapons by Neo-Umbrella.
    • First appearance: Resident Evil 6 (2012)
  1. Despite looking like a little girl, Eveline is actually an E-type bio-weapon responsible for the events of Resident Evil 7. She’s present throughout the game, watching Ethan’s struggle while trying to manipulate him, Mia, and the Bakers into being her new family. Eveline can spread a black, infectious mold that takes over people’s minds, and eventually warps their bodies, too (as seen when Jack and Marguerite Baker each turn into monsters).
    • First appearance: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017)

Jack Baker

PDF download Download Article
  1. Technically, Jack Baker’s monstrous form is created (or triggered) by Eveline, the bio-weapon covered above—but he’s still worth mentioning as an entity in his own right! That’s because Jack Baker ends up pursuing Ethan for a good chunk of RE7, fighting him multiple times and growing steadily more monstrous with each encounter. By the end, Jack has gone from human-looking to an unrecognizable and gigantic monster with eyes all over its body.
    • First appearance: Resident Evil 7: Biohazard (2017)

Lady Dimitrescu

PDF download Download Article
  1. Lady Dimitrescu is a mutant—originally human, and then transformed after being surgically implanted with a Cadou parasite by Mother Miranda, leader of the Black God’s cult. This parasite essentially turned Dimitrescu into a vampire-like creature; she has supernatural regenerative abilities and doesn’t appear to age. Due to a hereditary blood disease, she also drinks fresh human blood and is responsible for many murders over the course of her 60-year reign over Castle Dimitrescu.
    • First appearance: Resident Evil: Village (2021)

William Birkin

PDF download Download Article
  1. Dr. William Birkin was originally a regular old human and a scientist for the Umbrella Corporation. However, not long before the events of Resident Evil 2, Birkin creates the G-Virus (a strain related to the T-Virus) and, after being fatally wounded, purposefully infects himself. This triggers Birkin’s mutation into a fearsome creature encountered by Leon and Claire during Resident Evil 2.
    • First appearance: Resident Evil 2 (1998)
    • As a monster, Dr. Birkin becomes a large, bloodthirsty creature that infects others with the G-Virus, with multiple sets of arms and glowing eyeballs on its body.
    • In fact, Birkin is the first RE enemy to have large, destructible eyeballs on his body (the first of many in the series). He’s also the first creature to result from a human mutating into a monster.

Lisa Trevor

PDF download Download Article
  1. Lisa Trevor is a superhuman mutant—formerly human. Her family went to stay at Spencer Mansion and was abducted, with Lisa becoming an experimental subject exposed to a Progenitor strain that caused her mutations. After 20 years, Umbrella managed to develop the G-Virus strain from Lisa’s blood and planned to eliminate her after, although she managed to escape through her regenerative abilities.[6]
    • First appearance: Resident Evil (1998)
    • She wears a mask made from the sewn-together faces of other humans (which she, in her madness, believes are her parents’ “stolen” faces).
    • Lisa ultimately perished at Spencer Mansion when surviving S.T.A.R.S. operatives destroyed the facility.

  1. Mr. X is the hulking humanoid creature that hunts survivors in Raccoon City throughout Resident Evil 2. He’s an Umbrella creation evolved from the Tyrant in Resident Evil (the first game). He’s also more or less immune to player attacks, making him a constant threat that stalks both Claire and Leon throughout the game—and a big part of why Resident Evil 2 is considered such a scary game.
    • First appearance: Resident Evil 2 (1998)
  1. Nemesis is basically the Mr. X of Resident Evil 3: an unstoppable mutated stalker sent to hunt and kill Jill Valentine during the Raccoon City Incident. While Jill fights her way through a fallen city filled with zombies (and a few hostile survivors), she also has to contend with Nemesis, a humanoid mutant in an all-black outfit, who says only one thing for the entirety of the game: “S.T.A.R.S.” (referring to Jill’s squad at the Raccoon City Police Department).
    • First appearance: Resident Evil 3: Nemesis (1999)

  1. Tyrant is the first official bio-weapon encountered in Resident Evil—the creature that others, like Mr. X and Nemesis, were based on (in one way or another). It was created by the Umbrella Corporation to be both a supersoldier and a military bio-weapon; in the game, it’s the final enemy players must face before escaping Spencer Mansion. Tyrant is a large, humanoid mutant with elongated limbs and claws, and grey-green skin.[7]
    • First appearance: Resident Evil (1998)
    • Multiple Tyrants have been created over the course of the RE series. For instance, there are the experimental models, T-001, T-002, and T-011. Then, there’s the T-103 model, which becomes the first mass-produced Tyrant.
    • Mr. X is a Tyrant with the designation T-00, sent to eliminate survivors in the Raccoon Police Station.
    • Nemesis is a Tyrant—officially called the “Nemesis-T Type” (an experimental T-103 variant deployed to hunt S.T.A.R.S. members).
