Light As a Feather, Stiff as a Board

PDF download Download Article
  1. Bermudez says that Light as a Feather, Stiff as a Board is “a group chant-and-lift game where friends try to make someone levitate.”[2] Have one player lie flat on their back with their arms crossed over their chest. All other players place their hands under the person lying down and attempt to lift them with only their fingertips. Chant “light as a feather, stiff as a board” repeatedly until the player starts to float.[3]

Ouija Board

PDF download Download Article
  1. Are you brave enough to summon a real spirit? Then try out the Ouija board. Have everyone sit in a circle around the board and lightly place their fingertips on the planchette. When you ask a question, the spirit you’re supposedly communicating with is supposed to move the planchette on its own, spelling out its answer. Remember to say “goodbye” at the end of the session, or the spirit may linger…[4]
    • If you don’t have an official Ouija board, Bermudez says, “A simple Ouija board can be made using paper or wood with letters, numbers, ‘yes,’ ‘no,’ and ‘goodbye.’”[5]
    • Some believe Ouija boards really allow you to communicate with the dead, while others think they’re nothing but a party trick. Either way, make sure everyone is comfortable playing with one.

Charlie, Charlie/The Pencil Game

PDF download Download Article
  1. The Charlie Charlie ritual went viral in 2014 and has been a fun, spooky sleepover game ever since. To play, grab two pencils and a piece of paper. Draw an X across the paper to divide it into 4 sections. Label two boxes opposite each other “yes” and the other two “no.” Balance the pencils on top of the lines, and say “Charlie, Charlie, are you here?” to start the game. Then, take turns asking the spirit questions. The pencil on top should move to the spirit’s answer.[6]
  1. Bermudez explains that Sandman is “a story-based game where someone narrates as if filling your body with sand, creating a weird, floating sensation.”[8] Dim the lights and have one player lie flat on their back. The storyteller will then come up with a story about how that person died, including details about them being sliced open, filled with sand, and stitched back together. At the end of the story, the sleeper should feel heavy and have a hard time standing up—like their body’s been filled with sand!

    • If the answer is negative when you ask if you can start the game, contact with the spirit was not established. Try again until you get a positive answer.

Binoculars Game

PDF download Download Article

Tie a rope to a chair and place it near a door, then tie the other end of the rope around one of the players, who must remain silent. At 10:30 PM, slip a note under the door that reads “We welcome you. You shall not be harmed.” Remove the flashlights from the windowsills and walk around the house with them. If you hear knocking, the ritual has worked. Continue the game as follows:[21]
    • Once you hear knocking, grab a pair of binoculars and look out all the windows. If you see a figure in the distance, it is the spirit.
    • When you see the spirit, shout, “Forgive me, for I am mistaken.” Close your eyes and reopen them immediately. If the figure is gone, you found the spirit in time and the game is over. Untie your friend, unlock the doors and windows, and destroy the note you wrote earlier.
    • If you still see the figure, do not untie your friend or unlock the doors. Wait until the figure leaves.
    • If you don’t hear knocking or see a figure, restart the game and try again.

Blow out the candle and open the door to release the Midnight Man.[23]
    • Light another candle after you blow the first one out. If this candle goes out on its own, it means the Midnight Man is near.

If they don’t move, it’s a no. If only one set of pencils moves, proceed with caution. Continue to ask yes or no questions in the same way.[25]
