Have you seen a TikTok video that showed what someone was typing on Snapchat before they actually sent the snap? If you're wondering how to get the feature that lets you see what people are typing on Snap instead of just "<person's name> is typing…>", you've come to the right place! This guide will cover whether you can really see what people are typing on Snapchat, plus some more Snapchat tricks and hacks you should definitely know!

Can you see what people are typing on Snapchat?

While there are TikTok videos that make it seem like you can see what someone's typing by installing an app or plugin, there's no way to see what someone is typing on Snapchat until they send the message.

  1. There are some pretty convincing TikToks that make it look like the creator can see their friends typing responses to their Snaps before they hit send, but don't be fooled. These videos were created by (or edited with) AI, and there is no real way to see what people are typing in a Snap until they actually send the message.
    • Even if a TikToker claims you can install an app that exposes what people are typing on Snapchat with a "Snapchat visibility feature," these apps do not work.

Snapchat Tricks That Work

  1. If you subscribe to Snapchat Plus, you can tell when a friend is looking at your chat, even if they're not typing something! When a friend has your chat open, their Bitmoji will be holding a phone.[1] And, if they've taken a peek at the chat, you'll see the eyes emoji next to the conversation in your Chats list.[2]
  2. One way to see what someone sent you in a Snapchat chat is to "half-swipe" from the Chats page. Just keep in mind that if the person you're chatting with has Snapchat Plus, they can use the Peek a Peek feature mentioned above to see if you used a half-swipe. To half-swipe on Snapchat:
    • Go to the Chats page.
    • Gently tap and hold the person's icon next to the message and slowly swipe to the right.
    • Don't swipe all the way–swipe about halfway, and don't lift your finger from the screen.
    • Don't let go at any point, and make sure there's a little space between the right edge of the screen.
    • After you've taken a peek, swipe back to the left to return to the Chats page.
  3. Want to stealthily open a chat without your friend knowing? If you don't want to feel pressured to reply right away, you can put your phone in airplane mode, then open the chat, then delete and reinstall the app. This should work even if your friend has Snapchat Plus, as it won't count as a "peek." Here's how to do the trick:
    • When you get the notification, open the Snapchat Chats tab, but don't tap on the message just yet.
      • Note: Some people have found that this hack isn't as reliable as it used to be, so give it a test run first.
    • Turn on airplane mode. To do this, you'll usually just swipe down from the top or top-right area of the screen and tap the airplane icon.
    • Return to Snapchat and tap the chat you want to read.
    • After you're done reading it, close Snapchat, then delete the app from your phone (iPhone) or clear the app's data (Android).
    • Turn off airplane mode, then reinstall Snapchat from the App Store (if you're using an iPhone).
    • When you sign back in to Snapchat, the message will still appear as if you haven't opened it, even though you have!
  4. Even though you're technically only supposed to watch a Snap once, you can actually replay it as long as you haven't left the Chat screen yet. To replay a Snap, long-press a friend on the Chat screen, then tap the Snap to watch it again.[3]
  5. The Rewatch Indicator, which requires Snapchat Plus, displays how many people have rewatched your story. To see your rewatch count on a story, look for emoji eyes under your story. While this won't tell you who rewatched your story, it also works for private stories and shared stories, which can help you narrow it down.[4]
  6. While there's no way to see all of someone's best friends on Snapchat, you can figure out some helpful information if you understand Snapchat's friend emojis:[5]
    • 💛 - You're #1 best friends, which means you Snap each other the most
    • 💕 - You've been each other's #1 best friends for 2 months or more
    • ❤️ - You've been each other's #1 best friends for 2 weeks
    • 😬 - Your #1 best friend is also their #1 best friend
    • 😎 - One of your best friends is one of their best friends
    • 🎂 - It's their birthday!

  1. 1
How can I check someone's activity on Snap? If your friend is sharing their location on the Snap Map, you can see where they are and what they've been up to on the map.
    • Don't want people to see your location on Snapchat? Try Ghost Mode.[6]
  2. 2
How do you see what someone typed on Snapchat without opening? If you don't want your friend to know you saw their message, you can go to your Chats screen (but don't open the message), turn on airplane mode, and then read the message. After that, you'll need to close Snapchat, clear the app's data (or uninstall the app on an iPhone), turn off airplane mode, and reopen Snapchat.
  3. 3
How do you know if someone is online on Snapchat? To see if someone is online, check the Snap Map, look at their stories (and enable story notifications), or send them a chat and see if they open it. You can also post a story and see if they view it.[7]
  4. 4
What triggers the "Typing…" notification on Snapchat? If you get a notification that "<user> is typing…", the person has tapped inside the typing area to open the keyboard and begun to type a message. This notification only appears when the person is typing, not when they open the message.
    • Annoyed by the "is typing…" notifications on Snapchat? Unfortunately, Snapchat has not created a setting that allows you to turn those notifications off.[8] You can, however, turn off all Snapchat notifications in your Android or iPhone settings, or change who you get notifications from.
