A Dyson Airwrap costs upwards of $600 when it's not on sale, so you definitely want to make sure you're paying for the real thing! Sadly, though, because the product is so popular (and so pricey), there are plenty of scammers out there who try to recreate the Airwrap with cheap materials, then package it as a real Dyson product. Don't worry, we're here to help you spot the counterfeit! Keep reading to learn the physical signs that your Airwrap is fake, learn how to check the serial number to verify its authenticity, seller red flags to watch out for, and more!

How do you spot a fake Dyson Airwrap?

Section 1 of 6:

Physical Signs of a Fake Dyson Airwrap

PDF download Download Article
  1. On a real Dyson Airwrap, the adapter on the power cable (the thing that looks like a box) is about 5 inches (13 cm) long. The plug is about 2 inches (5 cm) tall, with red and yellow safety buttons. Meanwhile, the adapter on a fake Dyson Airwrap is usually much smaller and shorter, and the plug looks like the small plug you would find on a table lamp.
    • Some Dyson Airwrap plugs don't have safety buttons, but they do have "Dyson" printed on them, and they're still slightly larger than an average electrical plug.
    • Check out a comparison of the real and fake power adapters in this TikTok post by @thevalleygirll.
  2. You should be able to spot the logo on a real Dyson Airwrap pretty easily because of its bright, white, solid color. If the Dyson logo on your Airwrap looks faint and translucent, it might be fake.[1] Additionally, the real logo is engraved, whereas the fake logo is often painted or printed on top.

  3. On a real Dyson Airwrap, the serial number and model information are engraved into the handle and fade slightly into the main color. On a fake Airwrap, these details are often printed on, sometimes off-center, and they're easier to see.[2]
  4. This sign is pretty common, but hard to see unless you look closely. All Dyson Airwraps have three buttons, with the largest one centered between the smaller ones. The large middle button on a fake device looks like it's been positioned slightly off-center in its setting. On a real Airwrap, the button is perfectly aligned.[3]

  1. It should be easy for you to insert and remove attachments from your real Dyson Airwrap. But, as shown in this Instagram post by @loveyourhairbyml, if you struggle to make the pieces fit and have to exert a lot of force to get them out, the Airwrap (or the attachments) may be counterfeit.
  2. The high-quality materials in a real Dyson Airwrap retain their shape and integrity when exposed to heat. But fake Dyson Airwraps are made with cheap plastics that cave in, melt, or warp the more you use them.
  3. This sign is hard to notice unless you can compare your Airwrap with one you know is authentic. For example, in this post from @thevalleygirll on TikTok, the creator points out that her real, pink Airwrap attachments are slightly orange-toned, whereas the fake ones are blue-toned.
  4. A fake Dyson Airwrap may look legit when you first bring it home. But after using it for a while, you may notice the paint starts to wear off the handle (as it did in this TikTok by @valegenta). This is because fake Dyson Airwraps are made with low-quality materials, including cheap paint that rubs off with the friction from your hand. A real Airwrap will maintain its sleek paint job much longer, and it's also more likely to chip rather than simply rub off.
  5. Both real and fake Dyson Airwraps come with their own carrying case. As you can see in this TikTok by @bobblebootyfresh, on the real case lid, the Dyson logo is perfectly centered and stamped deeply and clearly into the material. On a fake case lid, the Dyson logo may look like it's just barely stamped, making it hard to see.

How to Check Your Dyson Airwrap Serial Number

PDF download Download Article
  1. Look for the product tag on the power cord and find the 13-digit serial number. Next, go to [4] , fill out your personal details, and choose "Airwrap" from the list under "Which Dyson do you own?". Finally, type in the serial number.
    • If Dyson tells you the product doesn't exist, it means the serial number is fake, and so is the Airwrap.
    • If Dyson tells you the registration was successful, it's a new, legitimate serial number, meaning your Airwrap is probably legit, too.
    • If Dyson tells you that the product has already been registered, this could mean a few things:
      • First, it could mean that your Airwrap is real, but it's used.
      • Alternatively, it could mean that it's fake, and the counterfeiters who manufactured it are using the same serial numbers over and over to make their products look more authentic.

Seller Red Flags When Buying a Dyson Airwrap

PDF download Download Article
  1. Anytime you buy a product as expensive as a Dyson Airwrap, make sure it comes with a warranty and a return option! Whether you're buying it from a retailer or a third-party seller, you want the option to get your product replaced or, at the very least, refunded if there's a problem.
    • Retailers and third-party sellers may not know they're selling fake Airwraps! A sneaky strategy that some scammers use is to buy a real Dyson Airwrap from a store like Sephora, replace it with a fake one in the box, then return it to get their money back. This basically allows them to get the Airwrap for free.
      • Meanwhile, the seller doesn't know about the swap, so they repackage the fake Airwrap to sell it as brand new or gently used.
      • Later, a real customer buys the fake Airwrap from the seller. If they figure out it's fake, they think the seller scammed them—but it's possible that the seller was scammed first!
  2. If you're buying your Airwrap online, check the seller's customer ratings first. If their rating is below 4 out of 5 stars, it might be risky to buy a premium product like the Dyson Airwrap from them.
  3. What if the seller you're thinking about buying the Airwrap from has really good ratings, and all the customer reviews are positive? Read some of the reviews before committing. Some sellers and retailers pay people or hire bots to write fake reviews for them. If the feedback all starts to sound the same, that's a major red flag.[5]
  4. The price of a brand-new Dyson Airwrap typically starts at $600. You might get lucky and find one on sale, but the discount isn't usually more than $150. If a third-party seller is selling a Dyson Airwrap at a big discount of, say, 25% or more, compared to the official Dyson website, that might be a red flag. They may be using the tantalizingly low price to trick you into buying a cheap counterfeit.[6]

How to Return a Fake Dyson Airwrap

PDF download Download Article
  1. Never throw away your receipt! Keep it and check how many days you have to return the item if it turns out to be fake. Typically, stores give you anywhere from 30 to 90 days. If you lost your receipt, you can still take it back, but they may give you store credit instead of cash.
    • If you bought it from an online retailer like Amazon, navigate to your Orders page to start a return within the timeframe specified in their Return Policy.
    • If the online retailer turns out to be a scam, file a fraud report at ReportFraud.FTC.gov.
  2. If you bought the Airwrap on eBay or another marketplace-style website, send a message to the third-party seller you bought the product from. Explain why you want to return the item and get a refund. If they don't answer or refuse to initiate a return, reach out to the customer service team on the website where you bought it or the payment service you used to buy the counterfeit.
    • For example, if you bought it on eBay, contact eBay directly if the seller doesn't respond. Even if you bought it knowing the seller doesn't offer returns, eBay has a 30-day Money Back Guarantee for products that arrive defective or not as described.
    • If, on the other hand, you bought it through Facebook or Craigslist and paid using PayPal or Venmo, contact the payment service's support team to see if they can help.
      • Keep in mind that PayPal and Venmo transactions can't always be reversed once they're complete. Time is of the essence, so reach out as soon as you realize you were scammed!

Legitimate Alternatives to a Dyson Airwrap

PDF download Download Article
  1. Find styling tools similar to the Dyson Airwrap, but cheaper and made by legit brands. Just because a styling tool looks similar to a Dyson Airwrap and offers similar features doesn't mean it's a counterfeit! You'll know it's a legit knock-off if it has its own brand name on it, which means the brand isn't pretending to be Dyson to scam you. Check out these highly-rated products that provide the same drying, curling, and brushing experience, without the heavy Dyson price tag:
