Expert Tips on Improving Your Dating Life
For this quiz, we determined your dating style based on your personality and dating preferences. No matter where you landed on the spectrum, there's some advice for you to take into your dating life. If you want to improve your dating life, whether by landing a partner or getting better at dates, you're in the right place. For this quiz, we worked with various dating coaches to help teach you how to build up your dating life. Here's what they had to say:
Dating coach Maria Avgitidis says when you're on a first date, be your authentic self. Since the goal of the first date is to get a second date, it's important to make sure you're compatible during the first. It's also important to be respectful. "Show up on time, be present," she says. To be present, she suggests you keep your phone tucked away and focus on trying to see what you like about them and don't like about them.[1]
Dating coach Laura Bilotta says to show that you're sweet and caring on a date, compliment things that show you're attentive, like their accessories, clothing, or hairstyle. "Also, it's important to pay attention to them, especially when they're telling you something important. Really show interest in what they're saying, acknowledge what they're speaking about, and show that you actually care about what they are saying by asking questions," Bilotta advises.[2] Follow up on what they have to say, keep the conversation balanced, and let things flow naturally.
Dating coach Lisa Shield says that when determining your first date outfit, "It's really important for both men and women to dress [well]." Shield says unless you're going to a fancy place or high-class event, don't dress up too much. If you're a guy, Shields suggests you wear a nice pair of pants, a button-down shirt, and make sure everything is washed. If you're a girl, Shields suggests wearing a lower cut blouse, a nice pair of jeans or slacks, and not too much jewelry or makeup.[3]
Shield also says to have a good conversation on a date, don't just skip from subject to subject, asking questions like an interview. "Really great conversation happens when you take one topic, and then you go deeper with it." Someone might ask where you grew up, then when you tell them, you can explain more about your experience growing up or what you like about the area. Then, open the door for them to talk about themselves, exploring the topic before moving on to another.[4]
