Therapist Rebecca Tenzer, MAT, MA, LCSW explains what the burnt toast theory is & how it can help you
PDF download Download Article

You hop out of bed, put the coffee on, and throw some bread in the toaster. You get distracted and a few minutes later you smell the toast burning. You decide eating is more important than being on time, so you spend another 5 minutes making new toast. On your way to work, you see a crash on the highway. In fact, it’s right where you would have been had you left on time. The inconvenience of the burnt toast saved you from a much greater tragedy. This is the burnt toast theory—the idea that small annoyances are the universe’s way of helping you or saving you from disasters. In an exclusive interview with wikiHow, a therapist breaks down what this theory is and how it can benefit you. We’ll also explain the origins of the theory and how to apply it in your own life!

Burnt Toast Theory Meaning

Therapist Rebecca Tenzer, MAT, MA, LCSW says burnt toast theory is the idea that minor inconveniences are the universe’s way of preventing worse things from happening (or even causing good things to happen). The theory is based on the idea that having to remake burnt toast in the morning, while frustrating, may benefit you.

What is burnt toast theory?

  1. The burnt toast theory suggests that small inconveniences might be interrupting something far worse from happening, says Tenzer. The annoyance might keep you safe and protect you, or redirect you from something else.[1] Sure, burning your toast is frustrating, but forcing you to remake your toast could be the universe’s way of keeping you away from a potentially harmful situation (like a car accident or running into a creepy ex).[2]
    • In other words, the burnt toast theory suggests that the universe has your back—even when it seems like the little things aren’t going right.
    • Burnt toast theory is primarily an orientation towards the world. It’s not intended to be a literal explanation for a divine process (although it certainly could be!). It has some parallels with the Hindu concept of karma, so it’s totally possible there’s more going on here than we understand.

Origin of the Burnt Toast Theory

  1. Nobody knows for sure, but it was popularized on TikTok in 2023. There are references predating 2023, so social media wasn’t the first place it was coined, but the idea certainly went viral there.[3] Many people attribute the initial viral video to TikTok/Instagram user @latenightepiphanies, but their original burnt toast video was taken down.[4]

Benefits of Using the Burnt Toast Theory

PDF download Download Article
  1. When most people burn toast, they blame themselves—not the bread, the toaster, or whatever distracted them in the first place. By not treating “burnt toast” as something you did wrong and believing instead that the universe will sort itself out by rewarding you later on, you won’t be so hard on yourself.[5]
    • If you think everything’s your fault, you’re going to naturally be very critical of your own behavior. Burnt toast theory really requires putting your faith in the universe, and learning to let go can be a big life improvement!
  2. By monitoring the little hindrances and joys that happen to you, you’ll naturally be more present and mindful of your headspace. The fact that you’re removing blame from yourself at the same time should cultivate a more productive and healthy mindset.[6]
    • If you tend to fixate on negative things, burnt toast theory is a great way to reframe the way you think about mistakes and bad luck.
  3. 3
It helps you think more positively. As Tenzer explains, the real power of burnt toast theory is reframing negative beliefs and restructuring thought patterns. In fact, she likens it to cognitive behavioral therapy. Tenzer says reframing is the ability to notice the first story the brain tells, which is often negative, and replace it with a perspective that is more workable. It forces you to take those negative thoughts and look at them in a different way from a more positive perspective.[7]
  4. 4
It helps build resilience. Tenzer likens the burnt toast theory to Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, which teaches that discomfort is built into life. She says the goal is not to remove discomfort, but to stay effective in its presence. So, a minor disruption can be an opportunity to practice flexibility and resilience instead of catastrophe. As Tenzer says, “Resilience is believing I can handle what happens, no matter how bad it gets.”[10]
  5. Burnt toast theory helps to reinforce the value of when rather than why. Not only is burnt toast theory a great way to cultivate more awareness, but there’s a great lesson here about learning to appreciate the way life moves to its own unique rhythm.[14]
    • Ever heard the phrase that life is all about “being in the right place at the right time?” Burnt toast theory is a great way of thinking about that!
  6. Miniature disasters aren’t so disastrous if you believe you’ve got something good waiting for you in the future. Even if it’s just avoiding a bigger hassle later, it can really take the venom out of something annoying. By embracing burnt toast theory, you’ll learn to treat minor annoyances like they’re nothing.
    • This should have the pleasant upside of minimizing the odds you get stuck in a bad mood. It’s hard to fixate on something that’s bugging you if you know it’s all part of the greater good.
  7. By applying a more positive and productive energy to the little annoyances you encounter, you’ll cultivate a more relaxed and healthy orientation towards the world. It's easy to look at life as a chaotic, aggravating mess, but burnt toast theory may be able to help you look at life as a comfortable ride where things can and will go right.
    • It all comes down to your reaction to things. Burnt toast theory helps encourage more productive and accepting reactions to irritating things, which helps you move on from things that don’t help you so you can focus on the things that do.

Examples of the Burnt Toast Theory

  1. It might be annoying to discover that you’ve missed the bus and need to wait another 15 minutes for the next one to show up, but if your crush happens to be sitting next to an open seat on the next bus and you get to hang out with them, maybe the wait was worth it!
  2. Nobody likes to waste 30 minutes changing out a flat tire, but say you get down to remove the old tire and notice your brake rotors are damaged. Maybe this flat tire prevented you from driving a car with failing brakes, which could have been really bad.
  3. Say you head out to go meet some friends but your phone dies because you forgot to charge it last night. Annoyed, you put the phone in your pocket and wait for your buddies to show up. While you’re waiting, you actually look around and take your environment in. You enjoy the sun, take a deep breath of fresh air, and feel at ease. Maybe this was the break you needed to reset your headspace!
    • The burnt toast theory doesn’t only help you avoid negative events. It can also push you in a more positive direction towards where you need to go.

Applying the Burnt Toast Theory

PDF download Download Article
  1. It’s easy to just react in the moment whenever something annoying happens, so try to start monitoring your emotions more thoughtfully and catch yourself before you start to spiral. In that moment of immediate anger or annoyance, just pause, take a deep breath, and accept the feeling.[15]
    • This takes practice! Don’t get annoyed if you start to try incorporating the burnt toast theory in your own life and you just can’t spot the “burnt toasts” when they come up. Stick with it. It gets easier.
  2. The gap time between your “burnt toast” and the benefit of this annoyance cannot be known ahead of time, so channel your inner Buddha and let the obnoxiousness float away. Look for the next pleasant surprise in your life!
    • Know that the annoying moment brought you to this point where you can be delighted with something good.
  3. Once you’ve gotten used to applying the burnt toast theory in your own life, you’ll start to feel like everything is in balance. Whatever bad event happens will surely be matched with a good event in the future. There’s no need to get bent out of shape when things don’t go your way.

The burnt toast theory refers to the belief that minor inconveniences are actually the universe's way of watching out for you or even saving you from bigger disasters. A great example of the theory (and the origins of its name) would be accidentally burning your toast in the morning and having to make another piece, which means you leave your house a few minutes later than you planned. On the way to work, you see a big car crash on the highway, and you realize that if you'd left the house on time, you might have been involved in the accident, but thanks to your burnt toast, you stuck around for a few life-saving minutes!

Burnt toast-like inconveniences could also be the universe's way of guiding you toward meaningful experiences. For instance, say you miss the bus and have to wait around for the next one. You're annoyed you've missed your regular bus and are going to be late for work or school—but on the next one, you meet your soulmate!

I agree with Dev here. The burnt toast theory encourages you not to cry over spilled milk, so to speak. Remember, everything happens for a reason!

Tips

  • Burnt toast theory only applies to minor annoyances and inconveniences. It does not apply to serious trauma or life-changing obstacles. In fact, trying to spin serious issues into “glass half full” scenarios is often a form of toxic positivity.[16]
