Easily manage custom friend lists on Android, iPhone, & desktop

You can use custom friend lists on Facebook to keep your friends organized. While you can only create a new custom friends list using Facebook on a computer, you can edit your friends lists using any device, including the Facebook mobile app on your Android, iPhone, or iPad. This wikiHow guide will teach you how to edit your friend lists on Facebook and how to unfriend the people you don't want to stay connected to.

Managing Friends Lists on Facebook

  • To add or remove a friend from a list in the mobile app, go to their profile, tap the Friends button, select Edit Friends List, select a list, and tap your friend's name.
  • On a computer, click Friends in the left panel, select Custom Lists, choose a list, then add a friend to (or remove a friend from) that list.
  • Create a new custom friend list on a computer in Friends > Custom Lists > + Create List.
Section 1 of 4:

Add & Remove Friends in Custom Lists (Mobile)

  1. If you want to add a friend to a list or remove them from a list you've already added them to, start by going to that friend's Facebook profile.[1]
    • You can search for your friend by tapping the magnifying glass at the top of the Facebook app.
    • You can also pull up a list of all your Facebook friends by tapping your profile photo, then tapping See All next to "Friends."
  2. This opens their profile.

  3. A menu will expand.
  4. A list of all your custom and pre-created friend lists will appear.
    • You can't create new custom friend lists on Facebook using the Android or iPhone mobile app. If you want to create a new custom list to organize your Facebook friends, jump to the Desktop method.[2] Use this method if you've already created a friend list (or want to edit lists like Close Friends or Acquaintances).
    • If your friend is on a list, a checkmark will appear next to their name. Tapping your friend's name will remove them from the list.[3]
    • If there is no checkmark next to a list, your friend is not on that list. Tapping their name will add them now.
  5. Repeat for any other friends and lists you want to manage.

Add & Remove Friends in Custom Lists (Desktop)

  1. If you don't see this option, click See More to expand any options that are hidden.[4]
  2. This appears in the left panel. A list of all custom lists will appear.
  3. If you want to create a new list to add friends to, click + Create List at the bottom-left corner of the page, then name your list.[5]
  4. This displays a list of all friends you've already added to the list.
  5. Click X next to a friend's name to remove them from the selected list. Your friend's name will disappear from the list, which means they've been removed.
  6. Click ••• at the top-right corner of the list, then select Add/Remove to open a list of your friends. To add someone new, start typing their name into the field, then select their name when it appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. 1
When you edit a friend's list on Facebook, what does Restricted mean? You can use the Restricted list to prevent certain Facebook friends from seeing your friends-only content. Adding a friend to the Restricted list allows them to see your public posts and profile information, but not other posts and details you share with friends.[7]
  2. 2
Can people see which custom lists I've added them to? If you add someone to a custom list on Facebook, they won't see the name of the list or be notified that you've added them.
  3. 3
How do I hide a Facebook post from certain people? You can add people to a custom friend list, then, when posting on Facebook, choose the option to hide that post from people on that list. When you're making the post, click or tap the audience selector, and select Friends except… (or Custom), then select the list you want to hide the post from.[8]
