FAQ

  1. 1
What is a BitLocker recovery key? BitLocker is a feature that securely locks down a Windows computer. A BitLocker recovery key is a 48-character password that lets you unlock BitLocker and access your computer again. You may be forced to use your BitLocker recovery key if your computer detects a security threat or if someone unauthorized attempts to access it.
  2. 2
What do I do if I can't remember my BitLocker recovery key? You'll have to completely reset your device and reinstall Windows. You'll need to do either a System Restore or you'll have to reinstall Windows with installation media, if you have it.[6] If this happens, all of the files and programs on your computer will be completely erased, and you'll have to start over.
  3. 3
What happens if I enter the wrong BitLocker key? Nothing will happen. Your computer won't lock up if you enter the wrong key. However, you won't be able to get into your device unless you have the right key, so it's more efficient to try to locate the key rather than guess if you're not sure.
