PDF download Download Article

Scrolling around on TikTok can land you right in the middle of some truly unexpected trends—and one of the newest trends is “Todo slander.” So, what does that mean? Well, it refers to the character Todo Aoi, from Jujutsu Kaisen. But why are people slandering him—and why does that have so many other JJK fans up in arms? In the article below, we’ll catch you up on the Todo slander taking place on TikTok, as well as the fan response to it (with plenty of examples, of course). So, keep reading to learn more!

“Todo Slander” On TikTok

“Todo slander” is an unserious trend on TikTok in which a few Jujutsu Kaisen fans have started calling Todo Aoi a “fraud”—largely because he isn’t in any major one-on-one fights throughout the series. In response, Todo fans have rallied, publishing many a video arguing that Todo is actually a super strong character.

What does “Todo Slander” mean on TikTok?

  1. The “Todo” in question is Todo Aoi, a character in the popular anime and manga series Jujutsu Kaisen. Todo is a supporting character in the series, and is generally known as a fan-favorite for his strength as a jujutsu sorcerer and over-the-top personality. The “slander” part comes from fans who are upset that the character is being trash-talked on social media.
    • “Slander” refers to a false, derogatory statement about someone that could damage their reputation.[1]
    • On TikTok, there’s a post circulating about Todo that mocks him and his contributions to the JJK series (which is what fans are disgruntled about and calling “slander”).

Understanding the “Todo Slander” Trend

  1. The Jujutsu Kaisen fandom is known for poking fun at its own characters, or even outright criticizing them. While Todo hasn’t historically been one of the targeted characters, there have recently been TikTok videos “slandering” him and calling him a “fraud.” Additionally, a derogatory meme about Todo has been circulating, provoking Todo fans into defending him.
    • The meme in question depicts Todo in Superman’s outfit, with the caption “Meet ‘Support’ man.” It basically mocks Todo, making him seem weak and overly reliant on other people to win his battles.
    • It also reads, “Give me liberty, Give me fire, Give me Yuji to hide behind. Or I retire!” Yuji is the protagonist of JJK; the rhyme implies that Todo spends more time hiding behind Yuji than he does actually fighting.
  2. A number of TikTok users and JJK fans have joined the Todo-bashing, saying that he’s a fraud because he never gets into one-on-one fights on-screen. For instance, a TikTok from @axgiuluz is captioned “Fraudo after jumping everyone because he knows he can’t win a fight by himself,” with an animated Todo jumping up and down below.
    • In Jujutsu Kaisen, a lot of the show’s main characters have had on-screen fights against pretty powerful foes—whereas Todo has had more of a supporting role in those fights.
  3. Fans of JJK who criticize Todo argue that he hasn’t had a big role in any super momentous or important fights (with Sukuna, for example). The beginning of this video from @frentynova features a different TikTok user arguing, “Todo has done nothing in the whole series other than fight with Yuji. Why would that not make him a fraud?” (Of course, @frentynova then spends the rest of the video defending Todo.)
    • The mocking post about Todo mentioned above also criticizes his lack of wins, reading, “0 on screen fights he’s won on his own. 0 times he has damaged an opponent.”
    • That said, Todo is a strong fighter in JJK; his lack of wins probably has less to do with his abilities and more to do with the fact that he’s a supporting character rather than a main character.
  4. Most acknowledge the Todo slander posts and videos as rage-bait—trying to provoke fans into responding—rather than serious criticism of the character. That’s why the trend is, ultimately, an unserious one; it’s mainly just this “Todo slander” circulating, with fans rallying to defend Todo and list all of his (many) positive attributes in response.
    • For instance, the rest of @frentynova’s video (mentioned above) lists the reasons why he isn’t a fraud—including the fact that he’s battled several powerful curses off-screen.
    • The video also argues that Todo’s entire cursed technique is “based on support,” referencing the fact that a lot of Todo’s abilities are designed to help his comrades!
    • Additionally, a TikTok from @kalildogg expressed disbelief at the Todo slander—and, specifically, that mocking post calling Todo “Support man.”
    • In the video, they say, “The JJK fandom is fractured and split all over the place, throwing around agendas and fraud accusations at any jujutsu sorcerer you can think of—except for one man, a man I thought we all mutually agreed was un-slanderable [Todo].”

Why Jujutsu Kaisen Fans Defend Todo Aoi

PDF download Download Article
  1. And Todo gets “GOAT” status for a few different reasons! First off, there’s the fact that he is genuinely a very powerful jujutsu sorcerer, despite what a few naysayers argue; he has indisputably taught Yuji some very important jujutsu skills over the course of the series, and he uses his support skills in battle to help other characters achieve victory.[2]
    • Even Gojo—the most powerful jujutsu sorcerer in the world—acknowledges Todo’s abilities and potential in the Jujutsu Kaisen manga.
    • In a TikTok video from @ajbro__ (whose video is also defending Todo), panels from the JJK manga are shown in which it’s shown that Gojo believes students like Todo can one day surpass special grade.
  2. While Todo’s boisterous personality is definitely over-the-top at first, there’s more to him than the brash confidence. When Todo befriends Yuji, the series’ protagonist, he also helps Yuji to keep his hopes up over the course of the series—even teaching Yuji in a moment of despair that, as long as one person remains alive to fight, even the fallen will not have been defeated.[3]
    • The long and short of it is that Todo is a pretty great friend to Yuji, loyal to a fault, and a surprisingly profound source of wisdom!
    • When you add that to the fact that Todo is a great sorcerer who focuses his powers on boosting his comrades in battle, it’s no wonder why Todo is a fan-favorite.

More About Todo Aoi in Jujutsu Kaisen

PDF download Download Article
  1. You’ve heard all about the “Todo slander” on TikTok (and why it’s mostly unserious fan discourse); now, let’s take a closer look at Todo himself! Physically, Todo is pretty imposing—he’s tall and extremely muscular, with a scar running down the left side of his face that he earned from training with his mentor. Additionally, Todo’s fighting style is a combination of brute strength, martial arts, and sorcery.[4]
    • At the start of JJK, he’s a student at Kyoto Jujutsu High School and already a grade 1 sorcerer (which is quite powerful, only surpassed by special grade 1 and special grade).
  2. It’s easy to think Todo is a bit of an idiot because he’s all about posing, showing off his muscles, and talking about how strong he is (or about his favorite pop idol, Takada-chan). He also hates being bored, once even beating up Megumi because his response was too boring! Nonetheless, Todo’s confidence is impressive—and, in serious situations, Todo actually is capable of maintaining his composure and acting intelligently.[5]
    • For instance, Todo had an important role in the Shibuya Incident (even though he didn’t have any big solo fights).
    • During the incident, Todo analyzed the situation and made the strategic choice to focus on rescuing his friends—especially Yuji, his “brother.” He went on to save Yuji from Mahito.
