Can the carabiners be eliminated and run the swing rope through a bowline knot at the hang end of the rope?

You could eliminate the carabiners. However, when 2 ropes rub against each other, it will destroy the rope due to friction. The carabiners act as a friction-saving device, preventing the premature wearing of the rope at the rope swing connection points.
