What is Black Clover about?

1. Black Clover follows a boy with no powers in a magical world. According to anime expert Dr. Applesauce, Black Clover is set in a world where everything is magic… except the series’s protagonist, Asta. Asta is a young orphan who, despite his lack of powers, wants to be the Wizard King who’s in charge of all the magical knights in the kingdom. He physically trains every day to be super fast and strong and completes his magic test to see what magical book, called a grimoire, he’ll receive. To everyone’s surprise, he obtains a rare grimoire with a black clover on the cover, which gives him anti-magic abilities.

   • Dr. Applesauce explains that Asta’s grimoire is the antithesis of magic, rather than the absence of it. The book allows Asta to summon swords that negate magic.
   • The rest of the series follows Asta on his journey to become stronger and be Wizard King, says Dr. Applesauce.
   • Dr. Applesauce notes that Yuno is another important character who serves as Asta’s best friend and rival. The two grew up together in the orphanage, and Yuno also wants to be Wizard King. Unlike Asta, he possesses a supreme magic ability.
   • The anime is adapted from the manga series of the same name, written by Yūki Tabata. The manga began in 2015 and has also been adapted into a stage play and video game spin-offs.
   • The anime took a break after the release of Black Clover: Sword of the Wizard King in 2023. The series is set to continue once more of the manga has been released.
