Big lips are a fascinating character design choice in cartoons because they can be used to signal so many different things. Sometimes it means the character is a sex symbol (Jessica Rabbit, Mr. Nimbus), or that the character is so old and uncool that they’re not even remotely thought of as romantic figures (Roz in Monster’s Inc., Nigel Thornberry). In this article, we’re going to look at some of the most iconic big-lipped cartoon characters of all time.

There are so many different character designs that incorporate lips that it can be hard to identify any recurring themes. However, there are a few fun categories we found:

   Francine is the wife of the titular American Dad, Stan Smith. Her character design plays up the classic “All-American” housewife of the post-War era, and she seems like she’d be right at home as a secondary character in Mad Men. Until she opens her mouth, that is. Those juicy lips curse like a sailor, throw around dark jokes, and say all kinds of wild, unhinged stuff. We love her.

Jessica Rabbit (Who Framed Roger Rabbit) (1988)

   The joke is that Roger—a goofy, anthropomorphic rabbit with a voice like nails on a chalkboard—somehow pulled Jessica, one of the hottest cartoon characters to ever exist in the history of media. The big lips are a core part of what makes her so attractive. The long purple gloves and red, backless sequin dress don’t hurt, either.

Olivier (Fullmetal Alchemist) (2009)

   Major General Olivier Mira Armstrong is the stern and fervent “ice queen” tasked with protecting the northern border of Amestris. Her character’s design is fascinating because she’s given these luscious lips and beautiful golden locks that clearly signal she’s attractive, but there’s absolutely nothing about her character that’s here to flirt, play games, or waste time. She’s intense. It’s a fun and unexpected design choice that really makes her character pop.

Chel (The Road to El Dorado) (2000)

   Voiced by Rosie Perez, Chel is the swanky love interest who helps the main characters defraud some indigenous people to try and steal their gold. She has become a cult favorite from this film because she very easily could have just been a stock character with zero personality, but she’s arguably the most dynamic character in the narrative. She’s inventive, clever, funny, sassy, and knows how to ham up her sex appeal to swing things in her favor.

Leela (Futurama) (1999)

   It’s a recurring theme on this list that big lips are a common feature for two categories of characters: older women who are secondary characters, and hottie love interests. Leela is one of the latter. With her iconic single eye and purple hair, the big lips really help cement her as one of the sexiest characters on Futurama.

Cruella de Vil (101 Dalmations) (1961)

   Cruella de Vil is skeleton-esque in her design. Skinny, tall, clad in fur, and wearing bright red lipstick on her large lips, everything about her screams “sneaky and charismatic.” There’s something also very haunting about her color palette considering what her goals are in the story.

   Our first “old lady comedic relief” character on the list, Roz is the crunchy-sounding spectacled secretary who constantly bothers Mike Wazowski over minor paperwork issues. Even just looking at her now, we can hear her gravelly voice muttering, “I’m watching you, Wazowski.”

Oblina (Ahhh!!! Real Monsters) (1994)

   A few characters from this show will make our list (it turns out monsters tend to have huge lips), but Oblina deserves the top spot. Not only does she have the most prominent lips out of any character on the show, but her design is just so dope. The black and white stripes, the praying mantis-esque figure, the wide, floating eyes—just a truly unique and original character in a show chock full of already memorable designs.

Reed Wright (Clarence) (2014)

   Clarence isn’t the most popular show of all time, and Reed wasn’t even a particularly important character in the show, but there’s no disputing that he probably has the biggest lips-to-body ratio of any character on our list. That’s worth something, right?

Flem (Cow and Chicken) (1997)

   Flem is Chicken and Earl’s best friend, and he’s just as weird and aloof as both of them combined. His character is also just as elaborately off-putting as the other character designs in the show. From the wisp of strange orange hair to the size two shoes and the giant red lips, he’s off putting in so many ways. And that’s what makes him memorable!

Usopp (One Piece) (1999)

   The sniper and third member of the One Piece crew, Usopp also cracked our “big nose” list. For a show that has a ton of strange character designs, Usopp really might be the absurd-looking fella in the main crew. We will admit though, we’re big fans of the bushy mullet look.

   Rick’s canonical nemesis is actually the only character in the entire show who is given fully-formed lips, at least so far as we can tell. The swanky, bisexual fish man is notable for oozing sexual energy, running an underwater empire, and (checks notes)...controlling the police?

Master Bob (Fairy Tale) (2009)

   Fairy Tale is an anime about a young girl who goes on an adventure to become a wizard. Master Bob is the wizard in charge of one of the guilds the main character would like to join, and he’s a blast. Bulging lips aside, he’s dainty, overweight, clad in makeup, and joyfully flamboyant. He’s a great reminder that sass, magic, and being yourself is all you really need to sweep people off their feet.

Nick (Big Mouth) (2017)

   It makes sense that a show named “Big Mouth” would have characters with big mouths. We could choose basically any character from the show to include, but Nick is the character most likely to get mocked for his giant mouth in the show, so he gets the top spot among his peers. It helps that his head-to-body-size ratio is so out of whack that his lips end up being bigger than his arms, too.

Cell (Dragon Ball Z) (1989)

   One of the major early villains of the anime and manga, Cell’s final form actually has very thin lips. His “semi-perfect” form, though? That face is like 75% lips. It’s a bit of a wild design choice for a character like this, but that’s kind of what makes Dragon Ball Z so beloved and iconic. The show never played it safe with their character designs.

Nigel Thornberry (The Wild Thornberrys) (1998)

   The wikiHow GOAT of “weird character” lists, Nigel has graced our articles on big noses, buck-teeth, crazy moustaches, and overall goofy designs, and he’s earned another feather in his cap here. It’s hard to really focus on his lips given how huge his nose and teeth are, but they are colossal. His bottom lip alone is roughly the size of his palms.

Lipp Cervas (SpongeBob SquarePants) (1999)

   Lipp Cervas only appears in one episode (“Karate Island”), and they aren’t a particularly memorable or fascinating character, but they do have a giant mouth! It’s also pretty hard to ignore a character whose name is literally a homophone for the phrase “lip service” in an article about big lips.

Betty Boop (Dizzy Dishes) (1930)

   Her lips may not look like much compared to a lot of the other characters on our list, but Betty Boop represents an important moment in animated character design. Cartoon characters up to this point were almost exclusively unrealistic animals (Felix the Cat, Mickey Mouse, Oswald the Rabbit). Betty Boop was the first major foray into human cartoon design, and those tiny, but very full lips would have struck audiences at the time as especially notable and unique. In fact, her lips (and other features) were so controversial at the time that it triggered studios to reel in her design and make it less sexually appealing!

   It only makes sense that a show named after huge mouths would have two characters make the list of characters with the biggest lips. Nick may have the most embarrassing big mouth on the show, but Lola takes those huge lips and uses them to shout, scream, and moan like nobody else. She’s fabulous and we love her.

   That’s right! Two Lolas! Shark Tale’s Lola is a little bit less dynamic than Big Mouth’s Lola, but the fish Lola does have some thick lips! It’s just not that interesting of a character, though. She’s a pretty stock love interest.

Bev (Rocko’s Modern Life) (1993)

   Bev is Rocko’s neighbor. Her main attributes are her propensity for freaking out over very minor things, and having colossal, giant blue lips. The funny thing about her character is that she’s supposed to be a cane toad, and cane toads actually don’t have lips. Rocko? He’s an Australian wallaby—an animal with notably adorable lips—yet Rocko has none.

   Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa is not a very well-remembered show. It was a Western cartoon about anthropomorphic cows in the 1800s, so it’s not hard to imagine why it wasn’t the biggest hit with children. Gil was an odd minor character from the show who happened to have oddly thick lips.

King Gator (All Dogs Go to Heaven) (1989)

   We pointed out some funny animal-lip discrepancies in Rocko’s Modern Life earlier, and All Dogs Go to Heaven is another notable entry in this arena. As you’ve probably noticed in your trials and tribulations on this planet, alligators do not have lips. Yet, King Gator is given lips so plump and luscious that they should be illegal.

Gnorga (A Troll in Central Park) (1994)

   The main villain of the film, Queen Gnorga is a winged troll who is the self-proclaimed “queen of mean.” She hates flowers, fun, and all things joyful. Which is kind of ironic, considering her lipstick and giant puckers are all about extravagance.
