The main trio in the Chiikawa anime and manga are Chiikawa, Hachiware, and Usagi. They are small, adorable creatures who are navigating a whimsical yet harsh world. Other notable supporting characters include Momonga, Kurimanju, Rakko, Shisa, and Furuhonya.

Chiikawa

As the titular character of the series, Chiikawa resembles a hamster or small white creature, though the creator has never specified what animal they are. They are shy, sensitive, and often nervous to step out of their comfort zone, which often leads to anxious tears. Luckily, Hachiware and Usagi always have Chiikawa’s back and are supportive besties. Despite being meek, Chiikawa is the first to throw themselves in the face of danger when it comes to protecting their friends from evil monsters.^{[1]

With a big heart and can-do attitude, Hachiware always finds the silver lining in any situation. They are the definition of a ride-or-die, often helping Chiikawa overcome fears and offering comfort. Hachiware provides emotional support for their friend group without expecting anything in return and expresses creativity through hobbies like playing guitar and decorating their cave.^{[2]

Even during dangerous situations, they’ll ask for food and rest, and they often imitate other characters’ actions and instigate drama. That said, Dekatsuyo, a monster-like chimera, actually took over the body of the real Momonga, which may explain their behavior.^{[4]

Inspired by the Japanese chestnut bun, Kurimanju is often seen snacking or drinking alcohol (and always making a very loud sigh noise after taking the last sip). They are studying to get their alcohol license, as their dream is to drink with their ramen master, Ramen Yoroi-san, one day.
