How does Chinese face mapping work?

   Chinese face mapping uses the parts of the face to indicate internal health issues. The theory is that if you notice breakouts, rashes, redness, inflammation, or other issues in a certain area of your face, you can use Chinese face mapping to figure out which organ or area of the body it corresponds to, which will reveal the underlying issue you’re actually dealing with.

   • This idea comes from the belief in qi, which is believed to be a vital energy or life force that runs through the body and connects the face to other organs.
   • For example, if you have a breakout on your chin, it may indicate an issue with your kidneys or bladder. A Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner may suggest changing your diet or lifestyle.

   Acne face mapping is different from Chinese face mapping. Esthetician Lorraine Kline explains, “Areas of the face that break out, which is called face mapping, can sometimes help the esthetician understand what type of condition they're having, [and] whether their breakout is caused by hormonal issues or whether their inflammation in the skin can be caused by menopause or hormonal stuff.”

   • Dermatologists widely agree that sebum (oil) production and hormonal changes are what cause acne. It typically appears in the T-zone (forehead and nose) due to the size of the sebaceous (oil) glands and pores in those areas, and on the chin and jaw due to hormones. Acne on your hairline may be caused by the buildup of hair products, and acne on your cheeks could be because of bacteria from your pillowcase, hands, or phone.
   • To get rid of acne at home, follow a skincare routine that includes cleansing, toning, moisturizing, and exfoliating. Use a product (cleanser or treatment) containing salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide to combat breakouts. See a dermatologist for a personalized treatment plan.
