Preparing for a Debate

   Research both sides of your argument thoroughly. According to public speaking coach Sagar Rawat, “the first thing that you really need is knowledge” when prepping for a debate. “If you don’t have knowledge on a topic, then it’ll be really hard, right?” Make sure you know your topic inside and out, and don’t forget to analyze what your opponent’s position may be, too. Their argument can inform the points you want to make or the evidence you want to show.

   • Your knowledge will boost your confidence, too. Rawat adds that, “If you go with the belief that ‘I’m the best [person] on the planet to present my topic,’ then you show up differently. That confidence shows on your face.”

   Present your points as clearly as possible. Rawat encourages you to think about the “clarity of your message. You have to have absolute clarity on what you’re going to talk about. [The debate] is not about you, it’s about the audience and what you can share in a distilled format that will be of value to them.”

   • Translation: It’s not enough for you to know what you’re talking about. Your opponent and audience need to know, too!
   • How does this affect your structure? Public speaking coach and broadcaster Heather Morrison adds, “If you’re arguing for something…lay out the benefits and then prove each one. One by one, you prove [your points] to be right.”

   Connect with your audience and opponent through eye contact and listening. Morrison reiterates that the debate “is not really about you. It’s about sharing information with other people. Look people in the eye and speak to them in your natural, normal voice. That’s all people want.” She explains that these tactics can work in your favor against your opponent, too:

   • “Make sure that the other person feels that you understand them,” Morrison says. “Repeat back to them what you hear and ask if it is correct. You can disarm people pretty well by having them feel understood…Then, if you make your point or provide your information, they’re more open to hearing it.”

   Hook your audience with a strong opening. Rawat lists some great strategies for opening your debate: “You can start with something that is thought-provoking, like a question. Or maybe you can start with some facts, like a ‘wow’ statement. Or, you could start with just a story…then convert that information into insight.”
