The Hashira are the most elite fighters in all of Demon Slayer. Each has mastered a unique breathing style that they use in battle against demons. We partnered with an anime and manga expert to help us break down the names and abilities of every Hashira, plus insight into the meaning behind their names. Anime & manga expert Simon Zeng says that the Water Hashira is Giyu Tomioka, the Stone (or Earth) Hashira is Geyomei Himejima, the Flame Hashira is Kyojuro Rengoku, and the Insect Hashira is Shinobu Kocho. Other Hashira include:

   Kyojuro Rengoku—Flame Hashira Kyojuro is one of the most popular characters in Demon Slayer. He’s strong and brave, known for leading and inspiring his friends. His fiery mane of yellow-and-red hair is iconic, and his breathing style, Flame Breathing, is a powerful attack that was adapted from Sun Breathing.

   • Name meaning: The name “Kyojuro” means “apricot” (possibly a reference to the color of his hair), but broken into parts, it also means “long life” (“kyo”) and “son” (“ro”). His surname, “Rengoku,” means “purgatory.”

   Sanemi Shinazugawa—Wind Hashira Sanemi is a powerful Hashira who definitely feels that the end justifies the means. But he’s also loyal to his group when it matters. He’s fierce, intense, and untamed—much like the wind that inspires his razorblade-sharp Wind Breathing attack.

   • Name meaning: “Sanemi” means “fruit” or “truth,” and “Shinazugawa” means “immortality.”

   Giyu Tomioka—Water Hashira Giyu is the incredibly powerful master of Water Breathing. He has a hard time opening up to other people, but deep down, he’s incredibly loyal and kind. And even though he sometimes questions his own strength, he’s often considered one of the most powerful Hashira to have ever existed.

   • Name meaning: “Giyu” means “volunteer,” “heroism,” or “loyalty,” and “Tomioka” means “wealthy” or “abundant” (“tomi”) and “ridge” or “hill” (“oka”).

   Mitsuri Kanroji—Love Hashira On the surface, the pink-and-green-haired Mitsuri is bubbly, friendly, and empathetic. But when she needs to fight, she’s fearsome, using her whip-like sword and lightning-fast Love Breathing attacks to dominate in battles against demons. Mitsuri’s breathing style is the self-taught Love Breathing, which is derived from Fire Breathing.

   • Name meaning: “Mitsuri” is a combination of “honey” (“mitsu”) and “glassy” or “lapis lazuli” (“ri”). Her surname, “Kanroji,” combines “honeydew” or “nectar” (“kanro”) with “temple” (“ji”).

   Obanai Iguro—Serpent Hashira At first glance, Obanai Iguro is an odd Hashiro. He wears a black-and-white-striped kimono, bandages around his face and legs. He has one gold eye and one green eye, and he wears a snake named Kaburamaru around his neck—fitting, since his technique is Serpent Breathing. Obanai has a fairly rigid personality, but his inner kindness shows when he’s around Mitsuri.

   • Name meaning: Literally translated, “Obanai” means “small banana within.” His last name, “Iguro,” means “dark” or “sinister.”

   Gyomei Himejima—Stone Hashira Gyomei has a calm, quiet demeanor, which means he’s often underestimated. But he’s extremely formidable: he’s over 7 ft 2 in (2.18 m) tall and one of the physically strongest Hashiras—not to mention that he’s mastered the difficult technique Stone Breathing. At one point, he even defeated a demon just by fighting it with his bare hands!

   • Name meaning: “Gyomei” combines “row” or “line” (“gyo”) with “darkness” (“mei”), and “Himejima” means “scream” or “shriek” (“hime”) and “island” (“jima”).

   Muichiro Tokito—Mist HashiraWhen we first meet Muichiro, he seems cold and distant, but as we get to know him better, we discover that he’s loyal and driven, and much of his aloof nature is actually a combination of deep-rooted trauma and amnesia. And his sneaky Mist Breathing attacks make it hard for enemies to see him coming.

   • Name meaning: “Muichiro” means “nothingness,” and “Tokito” means “time” (“toki”) and “transparent” (“to”).

   Shinobu Kocho—Insect Hashira Shinobu initially comes across as lighthearted and fun, but beneath the surface, she has a deep, raging hatred for demons. Like Mitsuri, she invented her own breathing style, called Insect Breathing. And since she isn’t strong enough to cut off demons’ heads, she poisons them by coating her blade in wisteria, instead.

   • Name meaning: “Shinobu” means “recall,” and “Kocho” means “butterfly.”

   Tengen Uzui—Sound Hashira Before he became a Hashira, Tengen studied as a shinobi, or ninja. He’s outgoing and confident, and he’s often joined by his three wives in battle. Tengen is the only known user of Sound Breathing, so he probably invented this technique.

   • Name meaning: “Tengen” can mean either “heaven” or “origin,” and “Uzui” can mean “marrow” or “pith.”

   In addition to the 9 current Hashira, the series introduces us to several retired fighters. Many of these Hashira have passed their skills down to the next generations of Demon Slayers. They include:

   • Jigoro Kuwajima—Former Thunder Hashira: He retired at age 35 after losing his leg in battle.
   • Shinjuro Rengokuo—Former Flame Hashira: Shinjuro is the aggressive, flame-haired father of Kyojuro and Senjuro Rengoku.
   • Sakonji Urokodaki—Former Water Hashira: The former Water Hashira now trains new demon slayers while wearing a red tengu mask.
   • Deceased: Kanae Kocho—Former Flower Hashira: Shinobu Kocho’s older sister, died before the events of Demon Slayer in a battle with Doma (Upper Rank Two demon).

  It is a significant debate among Demon Slayer fans when comparing Giyu Tomioka (Water Hashira) and Obanai Iguro (Serpent Hashira). Giyu possesses superior physical strength and stamina, but Obanai demonstrates greater combat speed, battle intelligence, and arguably showed better feats against Muzan. Most power-scalers consider them roughly equal, though Obanai is often given a slight edge in a one-on-one fight.

  Muichiro Tokito, the Mist Hashira, died sacrificing his life during the final battle against Upper Rank One, Kokushibo, in the Infinity Castle. During the brutal fight, he sustained catastrophic injuries from the demon. Despite having his arm severed, being impaled to a wall by his own sword, and eventually sliced in half, Muichiro used his final moments to help immobilize Kokushibo. His sacrifice allowed his allies to defeat the Upper Rank, but he succumbed to his fatal wounds shortly after.
