The major bosses in Elden Ring aren’t just random characters—they’re demigods, and they’re all connected in a convoluted family tree. The game’s rich lore was created in a collaboration between George R.R. Martin (the mind behind Game of Thrones) and director Hidetaka Miyazaki. To help you make sense of it, we partnered with a gaming expert who helps us explain the lineage of the primary demigods. Then, we break down the rest of the demigods’ descendants, plus their siblings (and who’s actually the same person). Some light spoilers for the main game and/or DLC.

Gaming expert Jose Rivera says every major boss in Elden Ring is either related to Queen Marika, produced by someone related to her, or shaped by the fallout of her decisions. Here are the main lineages:

• Marika and Godfrey are the parents of Morgott, Mohg, and Godwyn.
• Marika and Radagon are the parents of Malenia and Miquella, probably Melina, and possibly Messmer.
• Radagon (who is really Marika) and Rennala are the parents of Radahn, Ranni, Rykard, and an Unborn Child.

Marika the Eternal x Godfrey the Elden Lord

   This is the firstborn branch of the tree, also known as the Golden Lineage. “These are the demigods of the Golden Order's founding generation, heirs to divine legitimacy, most of whom betray or are betrayed by it,” Rivera explains. After Marika becomes the Godqueen of the Lands Between, she chooses Godfrey as her consort and First Elden Lord. They have three children together, then Godfrey is banished and deprived of Grace. He becomes Hoarah Loux, the first Tarnished.

   Morgott (Morgott the Omen King; Margit the Fell Omen) Twin of Mohg; born as a Cursed Omen and covered in horns. He’s banished underground but still remains loyal to the Golden Order and his mother.

   • “Morgott responds to rejection with painful loyalty,” Rivera explains. “Disguised as Margit the Fell Omen, he spends his life secretly protecting the city that discarded him. His Great Rune amplifies HP and quietly confirms a birthright no one will acknowledge.”

   Mohg (Mohg, Lord of Blood) Twin of Morgott; born as a Cursed Omen and banished underground. He turns his allegiance to an Outer God—the Formless Mother. “Mohg's [arc] is the tragedy of becoming something monstrous in response to being treated like one,” Rivera says.

   • “Mohg responds with total rejection,” notes Rivera. “He descends into the underground, devotes himself to the Formless Mother (an outer god of blood), and builds a grotesque dynasty around the stolen, sleeping body of his half-brother Miquella.”

   Godwyn (Godwyn the Golden) unafflicted by the Omen curse, beloved son of Marika and Godfrey. “[He’s] famed for befriending dragons and embodying every ideal the Golden Order claimed to represent,” Rivera says. He was the first demigod to die, killed by Ranni on the Night of the Black Knives.

   • Rivera says he was killed with “a fragment of Destined Death to destroy his soul while leaving his body alive. His soulless corpse, still animated, spreads Death Blight from beneath the Erdtree's roots, corrupting death itself and triggering the chain of events that leads to the Shattering.”
   • “Godwyn is the wound the entire story bleeds from,” Rivera continues. “Every instance of deathroot, every Deathbed Companion, every rot-touched corner of the Lands Between traces back to his body decaying the world's foundations. His death starts the collapse.”

Radagon x Rennala Queen of the Full Moon

   After two wars between the Golden Order and the Carians, Radagon, the head of the Golden Order, married Rennala, the head of the Carian Royal Family, in a bid for peace. “Before his return to Leyndell, Radagon fathered three children with Rennala,” says Rivera. “They carry his red hair and raw power, and split [the tree] in three completely different directions.” Radagon eventually left Rennala to marry Marika.

   Radahn Also known as: General Radahn, Starscourge Radahn, and Promised Consort. Radahn learns gravitational magic, stopping the cycle of the stars to freeze fate. He leads the Redmane Knights from Redmane Castle in Caelid before retreating to the Wailing Dunes.

   • “General Radahn [is] a legendary general who mastered gravity magic specifically so he could keep riding his beloved horse, Leonard, without crushing him,” says Rivera. “He worshipped Rennala as a devoted mother figure and trained under Malenia herself.”
   • “During the Shattering, Radahn waged a private war to halt the stars — directly opposing Ranni's plan,” Rivera continues. “The Scarlet Rot eventually consumed his mind, leaving him feral in the ruins of Caelid. His Great Rune reflects colossal strength and endurance, matching the legend.”
   • According to Rivera, “Radahn's madness isn't weakness, it's a mind that refused to stop fighting even as it decayed. The gravity magic detail does more for his character than paragraphs of exposition could. He loved fiercely and broke tragically.”

   Ranni Also known as: Ranni the Witch and Lunar Princess Ranni. She was named an Empyrean (demigod with the potential to ascend to godhood). She studied secret magic under the Snow Witch, and instigated Night of the Black Knives to escape her fate as a future god.

   • “Lunar Princess Ranni [is] an Empyrean — a candidate chosen to become a new god — marked by the outer god of the Dark Moon,” notes Rivera. “This put her in direct conflict with the Greater Will's plans for divine succession.”
   • “[She] orchestrated the Night of the Black Knives,” Rivera continues. “Used the same ritual that destroyed Godwyn's soul to abandon her own demigod body, escaping divine fate entirely. She has existed in a doll's body ever since, pursuing a future governed not by the Erdtree's cycle but by cold stars and dark moon.”
   • According to Rivera, “Ranni's ending is the only one where the game's cosmic order is genuinely rewritten rather than restored or replaced with more of the same. She is the only demigod who found a third option, not fight for the current world, not die inside it, but build a different one.”

   Rykard Also known as: Rykard, Lord of Blasphemy and the Serpent King. He leads an army of inquisitors who persecute anyone who doesn’t follow the Golden Order; assists Ranni on the Night of the Black Knives, Lord of Volcano Manor with his consort Tanith.

   • “Rykard [is] a Carian prince who rejected the Golden Order so completely he fused his body with the God-Devouring Serpent of Mt. Gelmir. His philosophy [is] consumption over governance,” Rivera explains.
   • “He chose to eat gods rather than serve them. Even in death, his followers at Volcano Manor continue hunting those loyal to Marika's order,” Rivera continues. “[He] represents blasphemy as a conscious ideology, not a corruption. He didn't fall, he chose this. His Great Rune embodies that choice entirely.”

   The Unborn Child After Radagon leaves the heartbroken Rennala, all she has left is her Unborn Child, an amber-colored egg that she cradles while exiled in the Grand Library at Raya Lucaria.

Marika the Eternal x Radagon of the Golden Order

   After Radagon leaves Rennala, he marries Marika, and the pair have (at least) two children. However, because of the connection between Marika and Radagon (we’ll talk more about how they’re the same person later), their children are afflicted by a Curse. “This is where the tree turns inward,” Rivera says. “Radagon returning to Marika, her other self folding back — produces offspring who embody extremes. The most powerful demigods in the game, and the most burdened.”

   Malenia Also known as: The Blade of Miquella and the Goddess of Rot. She’s the twin sister of Miquella, afflicted by the Scarlet Rot from birth. Her brother created a needle to control the rot, and Malenia became a fearsome, winged warrior. She unleashed the Scarlet Aeonia on Caelid.

   • “Malenia is an Empyrean born with Scarlet Rot as a permanent affliction she cannot cure,” Rivera explains. “She compensates by becoming the most accomplished swordswoman in the Lands Between.”
   • “During the Shattering, her duel with Radahn ended when she unleashed Scarlet Rot across all of Caelid to defeat him,” he continues. “She did not consider it a victory. Her Great Rune is half-rotted but radiates the force of will that keeps her fighting through a body in constant collapse.”
   • According to Rivera, “Malenia is not corrupted by power. She is undone by the cost of using it. That distinction makes her one of the most genuinely tragic figures in the game, her rot is not her failure, it's her burden.

   Miquella Also known as: Miquella of the Haligtree and Miquella the Kind. He’s the twin brother of Malenia; cursed with eternal youth; tender of the Haligtree; sought Radahn as his consort. “Miquella is Malenia's twin and the most enigmatic figure in the base game,” says Rivera. “An Empyrean cursed with eternal childhood, he cannot age regardless of how much power he accumulates.”

   • “He built the Haligtree from his own flesh: a new divine order free of the Golden Order's flaws and capable of curing Malenia's rot," he continues. “Abducted by Mohg before it was complete, sealed in a golden cocoon. The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC reveals the full weight of his plan — and how far his capacity for empathy was willing to compromise itself to ensure his dream survived.”
   • According to Rivera, “Miquella's tragedy is that his dream was genuinely good, and the methods he used to protect it weren't. He is the most morally complicated demigod precisely because his intentions were the purest.”

   Melina (Kindling Maiden) She’s the ally of the Tarnished (player). “Melina says she was ‘born at the foot of the Erdtree’ and refers to Marika as her mother,” Rivera says. “Bears no Great Rune, holds no kingdom, and refuses to confirm her own nature, but the implication is consistent enough that most lore readings treat her as an Empyrean candidate whose purpose is to guide the player and serve as sacrificial kindling. She is the branch of the tree that never got to grow.” She may also be the Gloam-Eyed Queen.

   Messmer Also known as: Messmer the Impaler and Base Serpent Messmer. “Messmer is confirmed in Shadow of the Erdtree as a son of Marika. His unmistakable red hair implies Radagon as the father,” Rivera explains.

   • “[He] was sent to the Realm of Shadow to wage a hidden war, then sealed away and erased from official history alongside the atrocities Marika needed to be forgotten,” he continues. “He did everything his mother asked and was discarded for it.”
   • According to Rivera, “Messmer is the shadow the Golden Order cast and refused to acknowledge. His fire-serpent power and barely-contained grief make him the DLC's most resonant boss, a son weaponized and then buried.”

Other Descendants of the Demigods

   Godwyn’s descendants Before Godwyn was killed, he bore offspring. His children are unknown, but we do know that his lineage continued. At the time that Elden Ring takes place, his descendants are far removed from their original demigod ancestry, as it’s said that the bloodline has become weak. The descendants we know about are:

   • Godrick the Grafted: Ruler of Stormveil Castle. Rivera says he’s actually a distant blood-descendant of Godfrey — the kind of heir Godfrey would have despised. He’s too weak to inherit his ancestor's strength, so he grafts the limbs and heads of fallen warriors onto himself to imitate Godrick. “His Great Rune is the anchor ring at the center of the Elden Ring, symbolically tying together all attributes,” says Rivera.
     • “He’s an ironic echo of a bloodline that built its entire identity on inherited greatness,” Rivera notes.
   • Godefroy the Grafted: Trapped in Evergaol.

   Malenia’s offspring As Malenia’s Scarlet Rot spread across Caelid, flowers blossomed from the rot. When they bloomed, several maidens emerged. They’re commonly called Malenia’s daughters, but they’re probably closer to clones or offshoots. Only Millicent plays a role in the game’s storyline. Malenia’s children are:

   • Millicent: Scarlet Rot must be healed by the Tarnished
   • Mary
   • Maureen
   • Amy
   • Pollyanna

   Rykard and Daedicar’s descendants We don’t know much about Daedicar other than that she was said to have “indulged in every form of adultery and wicked pleasure imaginable.” Her offspring with Rykard are:

   • Zorayas (Rya, Rya the Scout): Scouts champions for the Volcano Manor; adopted daughter of Tanith
   • Man-serpents: Aggressive creatures that populate the Volcano Manor

   Hoarah Loux’s descendants After Godfrey is banished, he becomes Hoarah Loux, the first Tarnished. Although it’s not explicitly specified, there’s a strong likelihood that he has at least one living descendant outside of his children with Marika:

   • Nepheli Loux: Assists the Tarnished in defeating Godrick the Grafted, adopted daughter of Gideon Ofnir (Leader of Roundtable Hold)

Siblings of the Demigods

   Maliketh, the Black Blade (Gurranq, Beast Clergyman) Maliketh is said to be the half-brother of Marika. However, this probably isn’t meant to be taken literally. He is her Shadowbound Beast, assigned to watch over her.

   • The Tarnished is tasked with giving Gurranq Deathroot in exchange for gifts.

   Blaidd Blaidd is a half-man, half-wolf hybrid who’s described as being Ranni’s step-brother or half-brother. But much like Maliketh, this probably isn’t a literal family connection—the Two Fingers created him to serve and protect Ranni while she was still a child.

   • Blaidd is an important ally as the Tarnished works through Ranni’s questline.

   Rellana (Rellana, Twin Moon Knight) Rellana is the sister of Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon. Rellana joined forces with her half-brother Messmer, eventually becoming known as the Sword of Messmer. She resides in Castle Ensis in the Realm of Shadow.

   • Rellana’s storyline is found in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree.

   Malika and Radagon At the end of Elden Ring, it’s revealed that Malika and Radagon are actually the same person—or at least, Radagon was created from Malika’s soul. It’s a bit of a spoiler, but it’s an important aspect to fully understanding the family tree.

   Miquella and St. Trina St. Trina, the Saint of Sleep, appears in Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree. It’s revealed that she’s actually Miquella’s other half, an entity with her own mind and soul who shares Miquella’s body.

   • Queen Marika the Eternal, Vessel of the Elden Ring: “She’s the absolute center of the story. She doesn't just rule; she is the divine law that structures the world,” he continues. “Her two consorts and her secret other half produce all the branches below.    • Radagon of the Golden Order: “Marika's second consort and, in the game's most significant revelation, her other self,” Rivera says. “Radagon is the male half of Marika, same soul, split identity. Every child he fathers is simultaneously a child of Marika. It also means Marika essentially had children with herself, producing a generation of demigods born from divine contradiction.”
   • Rennala, Queen of the Full Moon: “Head of the Carian royal family and master of the Academy of Raya Lucaria,” Rivera continues. “Before Radagon abandoned her to return to Marika, they had three children together. Her descendants carry his red hair, his sorcerous bloodline, and varying degrees of his ambition.”

   “Gods, beings like Queen Marika the Eternal, wield true divine authority and literally shape the world's metaphysics,” Rivera continues. “Demigods are their divine-blooded children and descendants: powerful enough to rule kingdoms, not quite powerful enough to redefine reality.    • “The Golden Lineage shows what happens when divine legitimacy becomes a weapon of exclusion,” he continues. “The Carian branch shows three different ways of rejecting that order outright, through blasphemy, through war, and through cosmic reinvention. The Empyrean twins show what happens when divinity is both a gift and a sentence, and the body itself becomes the battlefield.”
   • “The Great Runes are the clearest proof of this design,” Rivera notes. “They aren't random power fragments, they are character portraits. Mohg's is soaked in accursed blood. Godrick's anchors to the center because he could never find his own. Morgott's quietly confirms a birthright the world denied him. Malenia's is half-destroyed and still radiant. Every Rune tells you exactly who held it and what they were willing to sacrifice.”

Radagon being Marika's other self makes the entire Golden Order a self-devouring structure, a divine law produced partly by a being in conflict with itself.”

   • “Messmer being erased from history makes Marika complicit in the same exclusion she inflicted on the Omen twins,” he continues. “Ranni's escape reframes every other demigod's tragedy: they fought over a broken world when it was possible, however difficult, to imagine a different one entirely.”
