The Seven Continents
On Earth, there are seven continents, which are mostly determined by convention rather than a set of strict criteria. After all, we used to be one as Pangea. What are the seven continents and which one are you on? Learn more about them here!
- Africa: The African continent is the second largest of the seven, and highly biodiverse.[1] 1.4 billion people live on the African continent, among 54 countries, with the five most populous being Nigeria, Ethiopia, Egypt, Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tanzania.[2]
- Antarctica: Antarctica is the landmass on Earth’s south pole, and due to its cold, dry, and harsh conditions, is the least-populated continent. There are no officially established countries in Antarctica, though the 1959 Antarctic Treaty System designates and regulates activity by various countries on the continent.[3]
- Asia: Asia is the largest continent and is home to 4.7 billion people, the majority of the human population.[4] Asia is also the origin place of the world’s first civilization in Mesopotamia in 10,000 BC.[5] Currently, Asia is home to 49 countries, with the five most populous being India, China, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.[6]
- Australia (Oceania): Australia, also known as Oceania, is the smallest of the seven continents.[7] It contains 14 countries and is home to 46.3 million people, with Australia's population comprising more than half of the total and followed by Papua New Guinea, New Zealand, Fiji, and the Solomon Islands.[8]
- Europe: Europe is the second-smallest continent among the seven and has a total population of 745 million. Europe is the root of much Western civilization, including ancient Greek and Roman civilizations that have had extended influence on Western culture.[9] The five most populous countries in Europe are Russia, Turkey, Germany, the United Kingdom, and France.[10]
- North America: North America is home to 592 million people in the world and in modernity, has been most significantly impacted culturally by the voyaging of Europeans to the continent.[11] Its five most populous countries are the United States, Mexico, Canada, Guatemala, and Haiti.[12]
-
South America: South America has an estimated population of around 434 million people, with the Brazilian population making up almost half of it.[13]
The Amazon rainforest, a significant site of biodiversity, is located in South America. After Brazil, the four most populous countries in South America are Colombia, Argentina, Peru, and Venezuela.[14]
