Opportunities for Building a Character

A fictional character is defined by their core motives and personality, there is no doubt about it. However, if you want to make sure that your character feels three-dimensional and fully fleshed out, then the devil is in the details. Learn more about subtle opportunities to convey the essence of your character to an audience!

  • Attire: What someone wears says a lot about who they are and their circumstances. In visual media, someone’s clothes are an immediate and distinctive mark of their identity, but even in writing, mentioning the way someone chooses to dress can be informative. Characters who preen and dress in the latest fashion versus characters who are content to wear the same shirt for three days straight immediately convey a sense of their values.
  • Manners: “Manners” is not the same as mannerisms: this particular point is asking, what does this character do to be polite? This small but key question can be telling of a character’s, well, character! Do they prioritize other people’s comfort above their own? Do they hold no regard for social custom? Do they tip, if at all? Answering these questions and incorporating them into your storytelling will tether your characters to a social reality the audience is also familiar with.
  • Habits: Habits can be central, theme-defining motifs in character-building, or they can be minor, repetitive actions associated with a character. Either way, these help illustrate a character’s personality because they speak to who a character is when they aren’t actively thinking. It reveals both vulnerabilities and strengths in an authentic, uninhibited way.
  • Living Space: Just like attire, how someone chooses to dress their room can speak to the kind of person they are. Do they keep things simple and organized? Are there posters on the walls? How often do they clean the floor? Showing how a character chooses to inhabit comfort and safety will often pave a foundation for getting to know them out of their comfort zone as well. Changes in a person’s living space can also be a great way to show, not tell, a character’s mental state and provide insight into vulnerabilities.
  • Sleep: A character must rest, somehow, and for many that looks like sleeping. Though you might be surprised to learn it, what a character is like when they are unconscious speaks a lot to their conscious selves. If they cannot sleep well, or if they have poor sleeping habits, it reflects their lifestyle and also influences their behavior. Show a character’s relationship with sleep to delve deeper into what rest looks like for them.

Attire, manner, habits, living space, and sleep are all opportunities for the creative writer to seize upon and expand the fictional world of a character. Street names, too, connect the characters to a particular place in the world that fixes them within the context of the story. Elevate your storytelling with our Street Name Generator above!
