Light color is kind of like wall color—you don’t think about it, but it can dramatically impact your mood. So why are we lackadaisical when it comes to choosing lightbulbs!? If the right bulb can make your day, it probably helps to know what makes one bulb preferable over the other! Here, we’ll break down the range of available colors and the different types of bulbs out there. We’ll even offer some guidance on choosing the right bulb for you based on where you’re putting it.

Light Bulb Colors Explained

The color of light emitted by a bulb is based on the temperature of the light emitted. Warm light is comforting and good for living spaces, while bright, cool light helps you focus and is often found in offices. Here are the common light temperatures:

  • Warm white: 1,600-2,700K
  • Neutral: 2,800-4600K
  • Cool white: 4,600-7,000K

  1. Color temperature is how we measure lightbulb color, and it’s based on a scale that goes from 1,000 Kelvin (K) on the low end, to 7,000K on the high end. The lower the number, the warmer (redder) the light will be, and the higher the number, the cooler (bluer) the light will be.[1] Certified color specialist Juli Roland says that you can find the color temperature listed on any package of light bulbs, so just inspect the label.[2] Here’s a general overview:
    • 1,000-1,500K: Candle light and certain Edison bulbs. The color is a deep orange/red.
    • 1,600-2,700K: A calming, orange glow that illuminates moderately well. The color is a soft orange/red.
    • 2,700K: The standard temperature for a residential “warm” lightbulb. If you like “warm lighting,” this is probably what you’re imagining. The color is a very soft orange and yellow.
    • 2,800-3,000K: Slightly cooler but still warm, bulbs in this range offer phenomenal lighting coverage without being overbearing. The color is a very cool orange.
    • 3,100-4,600K: These are whiter temperatures that read as very natural light-wise. These lights tend to be more invigorating than comfortable. The color is white.
    • 4,700-6,500K: These are very cold temperatures of light where the texture will be more clinical, clean, and crisp. Natural sunlight is around this range. The colors are light blue.
    • 6,500K and up: These are very cold colors of light, and they tend to be deeply unpopular in residential spaces. They offer excellent coverage and illumination, though. The colors are bright blue.

    LED (light emitting diode) LED is the single most popular lightbulb type today, and in most cases, it’s what you want to put in your home. LEDs work by electrifying small particles inside the bulb to create light without generating any heat.[3] Sustainability specialist Kathryn Kellogg points out that switching to LED is a super easy way to save a lot of money on electricity, too![4]
    • Most common temperature range: 2,200-4,000K
    • Pros: They’re extremely cost effective and energy efficient, they last longer than other bulbs, they’re not fire risks because they don’t get hot, and they’re highly customizable.
    • Cons: They can feel kind of cheap to some people, because they come in a plastic housing most of the time (as opposed to glass).

    CFL (compact fluorescent) CFL bulbs are the curly lightbulbs made out of pigtail-shaped tubes. They work by running electricity through a tube filled with argon and mercury, which causes the gases to light up.[5]
    • Most common temperature range: 2,700-6,500k
    • Pros: They’re relatively efficient, don’t emit a lot of heat, and they’re often brighter and more vibrant than LEDs of the same temperature.
    • Cons: They contain toxic fumes, so if you crack one it’s not good for your health. They also don’t turn on or off instantly (the gas takes a sec to activate and deactivate), and they can struggle to glow when it’s colder out.

    Incandescent These bulbs work by running current through a wire (called a filament). The wire heats up and the heat causes the wire to glow, which produces the light from the bulb. Incandescent bulbs are going the way of the dodo due to their inefficiencies, but you’ll still find them from time to time.[6]
    • Most common temperature range: 2.100-3,000K
    • Pros: People often prefer the type of light emitted by incandescent bulbs.
    • Cons: They generate a ton of heat, they’re power inefficient, they burn out quickly, and they cost more than other options.

    Halogen Halogen bulbs use electricity to heat a very delicate wire made of tungsten, which causes the halogen gas inside of the bulb to glow. You often find halogen bulbs on the headlights of modern cars, much to the chagrin of people who like warmer light.[7]
    • Most common temperature range: 2,700-6,000K
    • Pros: These bulbs are the best at mimicking natural sunlight if that’s what you’re looking for. They also turn on and off instantly, and they’re very powerful, which is great if you prioritize bright lighting.
    • Cons: They’re kind of fragile bulbs, and they don’t have a very long lifespan. They also tend to use a ton of electricity.

Choosing the Right Bulb for You

If you prefer the welcoming, orange glow of a soft light and you don’t want every single corner of a space to be full of bright light when you turn the lights on, you’re best off opting for a warmer or softer white. DIY specialist Sara Fogle says that living spaces generally work best with softer lighting.[8]
    • Best for: Bedrooms, dens, living rooms, small lobbies, reading rooms, and dens.

    Neutral and cool white (3,200-4,100K) If you prefer it when a room is brightly lit and everything is very clear, you’re probably in the market for a bulb in this range. You’ll also like this range if you really feel at your best during noon or so when the sun is high in the sky—natural temperature can emulate sunlight quite well!
    • Best for: Kitchens, basements, hospitals, offices, play rooms, and game rooms.
  3. Almost nobody enjoys these lights in the parts of their home where they relax or sleep, but they’re great at illumination and can help keep you awake (they tend to have a lot of blue light, which triggers the human brain to stay awake).[9] Fogle says you want brighter whites in areas where you need to really see what you’re doing, like laundry rooms or basements.[10]
    • Best for: Bathrooms, work areas, offices, garages, basements, and gyms.

Kelvin vs. Lumens: What’s the Difference?

    Kelvin is color temperature, and lumens are brightness. Kelvin very specifically refers to color temperature, which is (basically) the color of the light. Lumens (lm) refer to the overall brightness. You could have a very bright lightbulb at 2,700K (high lumens) or a very dim lightbulb at 2,700K (low lumens). Bulbs typically range from 100 lm to 1,200 lm. Here’s general guidance on which brightness is best for you and when.[11]
    • 100-300 lm: Very soft lighting. Perfect for ambient lights, table lamps, indoor uplighting, accent lamps, and decorative sconces.
    • 400-700 lm: This is around the ideal range for general lighting purposes for most people. It’s standard overhead lighting, ideal for kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms.
    • 800-1,200 lm: These super bright bulbs are often reserved for specific task lighting. Reading lamps, flashlights, work lights, etc.

    Lumens are often listed alongside a watts equivalent. Electrical power is measured in watts. The problem is that different types of bulbs (LED, incandescent, halogen, etc.) convert energy to light with different levels of efficiency, so a 40W halogen bulb and a 40W CFL bulb will have different levels of brightness. This is why you should always use lumens when inspecting a bulb and trying to identify how bright it will be.[12]
    • Most bulbs will list a “wattage equivalent” next to the lumens to avoid any confusion.
    • You may notice that LED bulbs have really low wattages listed on the packaging. This is part of why LEDs are so popular—they really don’t require very much power to illuminate the bulb!
