If you like apples, when you bake them with this recipe, you'll have a tender apple that tastes sweeter and more palatable than just apples alone.
Ingredients
Yield: 4 baked apples
- 4 large unpeeled tart apples (Granny Smith or Rome)
- 2-4 Tbsp packed brown sugar
- 4 tsp butter
- 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
-
1 cup water
- You may need less (to 3/4 cup) if the apples are larger.
Steps
-
1Preheat your oven. Set it to 375 °F (191 °C).
-
2Core your apples. Make sure you core them so they are cored to a half inch to the bottom.Advertisement
-
3Peel each apple you intend to make. You can remove 1 inch strips around the middle of the apple.
- You can also peel the upper half to avoid splitting during baking.
-
4Place all apples into an ungreased 8 inch square glass baking dish.
-
5Add seasonings. Spoon in each: the sugar, butter and cinnamon.
-
6Add water to the dish, until the dish has water up to 1/4 inch deep.
-
7Bake for 30-40 minutes.
-
8Observe your apples. When you the apple is pierced with a fork and comes out tender, it's done.
-
9Serve each apple. Place them in a bowl, and eat it with a fork or spoon. Garnish as desired.
- Garnish each apple with whipped cream, vanilla ice cream, caramel drizzle, or some chopped nuts (like walnuts, pecans, peanuts, or cashews). You can also use fresh mint, raisins, or dried cranberries, but this decision is up to you.

1Prepare the dish. Use the same overall method and ingredients, but avoid using the water.[1]
-
2Place each apple inside a 10-ounce custard cup or microwaveable casserole bowl.
-
3Avoid using a cover.
-
4Microwave this recipe. Place it in your microwave's center, and "bake" for 5-10 minutes, or until tender.
- This bake time is approximately set for microwaves of about 1000 W.
- Rotate these cups a half turn at the three minute mark or when the apples are tender.
-
5Use the same garnishes as the oven recipe called for, when serving.
- Keep in mind, that making this recipe this way - although faster - gives it a rather milder flavor.
- Also to keep in mind, that with this recipe, the apples may sometimes be somewhat mushier, and the skin may produce some noticeable wrinkles.
