How do you find your rising sign?

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Find out what time you were born. Astrologer Julia Topaz says rising signs change every two hours, so you need an accurate birth time to determine what your rising sign is. “The rising sign represents the point on the horizon at the time you were born, so it’s very time-sensitive,” Topaz notes.[16] You can find out your birth time by asking your parents, or you can check documents like a long-form birth certificate.
    • What if I don’t know my time of birth? Unfortunately, there’s not a super concrete way to find your rising sign without a birth time. Try your best to narrow down your birth time with the information you have. If you can’t do that, some astrologers will work with you to rectify your birth chart. This means they’ll work backward to find your rising sign.[17]
  2. 2
Identify where you were born. Topaz says your rising sign is also based on the location where you were born.[18] You’ll need to find out the city where you were born to properly calculate your rising sign. You can ask your parents where you were born, or you can consult your birth certificate.
    • What if I don’t know my place of birth? Identifying your rising sign will be difficult without a specific location. If you have a general idea of where you were born, you can narrow down the possibilities. As is the case with a missing birth time, your best bet is probably to work with an astrologer to rectify your chart.
  3. 3
Use an online birth chart calculator to find your rising sign. Now that you have your birth time and location to go with your date of birth, you can input the information into an online birth chart calculator. Use a website like Cafe Astrology to find out your rising sign for free. This will give you a complete birth chart with your rising sign and your 12 house positions.

What does your rising sign mean?

PDF download Download Article
  1. It can shape your outward demeanor, the way other people perceive you, and even your physical appearance. You can think of your rising sign as your social mask. This is the impression you make on others, but it is not necessarily your core essence. “The ascendant is how you appear towards others, especially in the first meeting,” notes Eyedealism.[19]
  2. Think of your rising sign as a lens that you project your sun and moon signs through. While your sun influences your personality and ego and your moon influences your emotions, your rising sign influences how those things project outwardly. It can also steer your initial responses to external factors and circumstances.[20]
  3. Your rising sign indicates your astrological chart ruler. According to psychic astrologer Stina Garbis, “Your astrological chart ruler is the planet that rules your rising sign.”[21] Your chart ruler influences your overall energy and how you make decisions. This planet sets the tone for your whole chart, and it shows you how to move with purpose.[22]

Simply match up your birthday with the corresponding date range for your sun sign. To make it easy for you, here are the date ranges for each sun sign:[23]
    • Aries: March 21 - April 19
    • Taurus: April 20 - May 20

    • Capricorn: December 22 - January 19
    • Aquarius: January 20 - February 18
    • Pisces: February 19 - March 20
  2. 2
Use your birth date, time, and location for your moon sign. Your moon sign represents your inner world and emotional nature.[24] As is the case with your rising sign, you’ll need your exact birth time and location in addition to your birthday. If you don’t have that info, you can always work with an astrologer to rectify your chart (work backward to find out your sign).
