Fashion authentication expert Nikita Chen explains how to tell if your Gucci belt is fake
PDF download Download Article

Gucci belts can be quite expensive because they are such a desirable designer brand. Because of this, you want to make sure that the belt you are buying is an authentic one, rather than a fake. Most fake Gucci belts have small imperfections, and in this article, fashion authentication experts partnered with wikiHow to tell you what they are, as well as how to use them to tell the fake belts from the real ones. Read on to learn how to spot a fake Gucci belt, what to do if you buy a fake, and more.

How to Tell If a Gucci Belt Is Real

Fashion authentication expert Nikita Chen says to inspect the G-Lock logo on the front of the belt. If the belt is real, it should be shiny with a crisp gold finish, not matte or dull. The stitching should also be clean and uniform. Other things to look for include:

  • The thickness of the GG’s. On fakes, the buckle is much thicker.
  • The embossing on the serial number. On fakes, the stitching is poor.
  • The box color and Gucci text. On fakes, the box is white, and the text is worn.

12 Ways to Spot a Fake Gucci Belt

  1. Real Gucci belts tend to come in cream-tinted boxes, white fakes are typically pure white. The boxes can also come green, but those are typically reserved for high-value and flagship products.[1] The text on fakes also tends to be worn, chipped, and in some cases, features uneven spacing.

  2. The manufacturing text is located on the back of the belt, and on real Gucci belts, this text is easy to read. On fakes, however, the text is poorly engraved and tiny, making it difficult to read and a telltale sign of counterfeit product.
    • The trademark symbol (®) is also poorly constructed on fakes, with the R being too large for the small circle surrounding it.
    • Inspect the “GUCCI” text here, as well. Fakes tend to have uneven spacing between the U and C (or other letters, depending on how it was constructed).

  3. 3
Check for a non-brown color and missing double Gs on the gift bag. All authentic Gucci belts come in a gift bag. The bag should be dark brown with the double G logo (one backwards capital G facing another capital G) printed all over the surface, excluding the bottom of the bag’s interior.[2]
    • There should also be a dark brown string on top that can be tied to keep the product from falling out.
  4. All authentic Gucci belts come in a dust bag. The bag should be dark in color and have the brand name “GUCCI” in yellow gold letters in the center of the bag. There should be a drawstring, with only one string, in the top right corner of the dust bag.[3]
    • There should also be a tag on the inside of the dust bag that says “Gucci Made in Italy.” If this is missing, your belt is likely fake.
  5. Chen says that on real Gucci belts, the double G logo on the buckle has a smooth shine thanks to the brass hardware it’s made of. Fakes use a more matte material, which leads to a dull shine. It’s not that fakes don’t shine, it’s that they shine in a way that makes the buckle seem more mustard yellow rather than the golden shine Gucci is known for.[4]
  6. The stitching on a real Gucci belt should be literally perfect. Not nearly perfect – actually perfect. You are paying for the high quality that this designer brand is known for. According to Chen, each stitch should be straight across (not slanted) and exactly the same size as every other stitch.[5]
    • If there are noticeable mistakes in the stitching, it’s probably a fake Gucci belt.

Authentication begins with inspecting quality and accuracy. Materials should look and feel durable and of high quality in nature. Logos should be spelled correctly with even spacing. The manufacturing code should be present somewhere on the item.

  7. Authentic Gucci belts are made with perfect craftsmanship. If you notice any fraying of the materials on the belt, it is almost certainly a fake. This is especially true if you buy a “new” Gucci belt and it arrives with some fraying.[6]
    • If you notice any imperfections in the materials, this is a sign that you probably have a fake belt on your hands.
  8. Fake Gucci belts often have clip-on belt buckles, whereas authentic Gucci belt buckles are usually soldered onto the larger portion of the belt. None of the authentic Gucci belt models include a button holding the belt buckle in place.
    • Some models have screws on the back of the belt buckle, while others don’t. Check the specifics of your model to determine if it’s supposed to have one or not.
  9. On the back of the buckle, the buckle pin should be small and golden, just like the buckle. The golden screw (which is located behind the belt on the buckle-end) should be a gold hexagon located just above the manufacturing information. If it’s silver, a different shape, and/or off-center, you’ve likely got a fake on your waist.
  10. According to Chen, authentic Gucci belts have a stamp on the inside portion of the belt, which is typically missing on their fake counterparts.[7] In some newer belts, the stamp is near the buckle, while some of the older belts stamp the belt toward the center, length-wise.
    • The stamp should say the brand name, “Made in Italy,” and include an identifying number.[8]
  11. An authentic Gucci serial number should be 19-21 digits long. Chen says that typically, the number should begin with “114” or “223.”[9] If your number begins with “1212,” it is definitely a fake. This is a common serial number given to fake Gucci belts.
    • The serial number is only a secondary measure for identifying the Gucci belt's authenticity. Every Gucci belt has a unique serial number, especially the last set of characters.
    • The first 11 digits of the serial number " 400593 AP00T" indicate Gucci's brand-authorized supplier code for the specific style.
    • The third set of characters," 90. 36," indicates the SIZE length, 90 indicates the size in CM, the number 36 indicates the waist size in INCHES.
    • The last set of characters represents the color; Gucci also uses 4 digits and 6 digits for the last set of serial codes for specific items.
  12. If you ordered your Gucci belt from anywhere other than a Gucci store or retailer, you should ask for the original receipt as proof of purchase. This will help alleviate any worries you have about the authenticity of the belt.
    • A receipt for an authentic belt should have the Gucci name at the top, the address of a verifiable Gucci store or outlet (including contact information), and the description/price of the belt in question.

Checking Specific Gucci Belts for Authenticity

  1. For authentic Monogram belts, the beginning of the pattern starts with two Gs; it should not be cut off in the middle or begin at any other point in the pattern. The background should be beige, the GG design should be blue or ebony, and the inside should be black leather. There should be no screws in the hardware of the belt buckle.[10]
    • Signs Your Monogram GG Beige Belt Is Fake: The pattern is cut off, the background isn’t beige, the inside isn’t black leather and there are screws in the buckle’s hardware.
    • For every two GG patterns, there should be a hold for the belt buckle inside the second G.
  2. The buckle of the Black Imprime belt is composed of a regular G and an upside down G. The normal G has a matte finish, while the upside down G should have a metallic black finish. The inside of the belt should be a suede material. The double G logo should be perfectly printed over the entirety of the belt.
    • Signs Your Black Imprime Belt Is Fake: The inside of the belt’s material isn’t suede, the G is non-matte and the upside down G isn’t metallic black, and the GG isn’t printed across the belt.
    • This model should have screws on the back side of the belt buckle. Inspect the back of the belt buckle and see if there are noticeable screws.
  3. The size of the belt should be included in the serial number, and not imprinted anywhere else on the belt – fakes often have the size printed on the leather of the non-buckle end. The stitching should include the double G logo printed all over the entire belt. The inside of the belt is suede.
    • Signs Your Gucci GG Belt Is Fake: The size is printed on the belt, the stitching is poor and doesn’t include “GG” logos across the belt, and inside material isn’t suede.
    • Authentic Gucci belts also shouldn’t have a button holding the belt buckle in place. This is a clear sign of a fake.

What to Do If You Buy a Fake Gucci Belt

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Reach out to the seller to see if you can return the item. If you suspect the item is fake and have been able to gather details backing that up, reach out to the seller and let them know about the situation. Depending on the seller and their policies, they may be willing to refund you to help resolve the situation, especially if they’re a licensed business.
  2. 2
If you bought through a secondhand site, reach out to the support team. If the seller is reluctant to help you out and give you a refund, reach out to the support team on the website you bought the Gucci belt from and let them know that you suspect the item is fake to see if they’re able to go around the seller and process the refund.
    • Different websites have different policies, so check the return and refund policies before reaching out.
  3. 3
If you can’t get any help, file a claim with your bank. When the seller and support team are of no help, contact your credit card or debit card company and provide them with the details of the transaction. Let them know that the item (and by extension, the charge) was fraudulent and ask them to reverse it.[11]
    • If they approve, you can expect the money back in your account anywhere from 10-30 days, depending on the method of payment used
  4. 4
Report the seller on the platform you bought the product from. Reporting the seller is a great way to get them off the platform. Depending on the platform you used to purchase the fake Gucci belt, the reporting process may look a bit different. Generally, though, the process involves reporting the seller, providing reasons for the report, and determining what level of contact you wish to have with them in the future.[12]
    • For example, if you bought a fake product off of eBay, head to their customer support page and report an issue with a seller. Depending on your reason for reporting, you may have to provide details like the seller’s username and selling tactics.
    • You can also report the seller to the Federal Trade Commission if you really want to get them deplatformed.[13]
  5. 5
Spread the word and let others know that the seller is counterfeit. After you’ve determined that the Gucci belt is fake, head to the seller’s page and leave a 1-star review. In the review description, let others know that although the product was advertised as legit, it turned out to be fake. This will help future shoppers avoid getting scammed by the same seller.

How to Avoid Buying Fakes

PDF download Download Article
  1. 1
Always check the reviews before buying. Reviews are a great way to tell if the seller is legit or not, as people who have been scammed can (and will) leave bad reviews to warn other people before they become victims of the scam. So head to the seller’s page and check for lots of 1-star reviews if you suspect they sell fakes. If you find them, steer clear, as your hunch was correct.[14]
    • Sellers with little to no reviews are also fishy, as they may still be scamming, just without any reviews or victims.
  2. 2
Make sure the seller has a verifiable history of selling real products. Before you click purchase and submit your payment, make sure the person you’re buying from has a history of selling legitimate products by checking their page, product history, and reviews. If you notice an extensive page history with lots of products sold, all with good reviews and satisfied customers, you’ve got a much better chance at getting a real product.[15]
  3. 3
Buy through sites with verified products (or directly from the retailer, if possible). While shopping directly through resellers is convenient, it’s important to make sure the product you’re looking at is authentic, and you can skip the authentication process by buying through sites that authenticate the products for you, like StockX and GOAT. To avoid fakes entirely, it’s best to shop directly with the retailer, if possible.

Article SummaryX

If you’re not sure how to spot a fake Gucci belt, start by looking for perfectly straight stitches all the way down the belt. If you see any irregular stitching or frayed stitches, the belt is most likely a fake. Next, check the hardware to ensure it’s soldered onto the larger portion of the belt. A clip-on buckle is a likely indication of a knockoff. If the belt is real, it should also include a Gucci stamp on the inside of the leather, with “Made in Italy” and an identifying number included in the stamp.
