Players have to describe the word at the top of a Taboo card without using any of the listed forbidden words. Some good example words to try along with their forbidden words are:
- Cow but don’t say milk, udder, black and white, dairy, or farm
- Money but don’t say cash, spend, dollar, coin, or value
- Kitchen but don’t say food, cooking, oven, fridge, or dishes
- Ice Cream but don’t say dairy, frozen, cold, dessert, or cone
- Underwear but don’t say white, clothing, private, white, or boxers
- Headache but don’t say pain, pound, medicine, migraine, or Tylenol

1Choose players to give clues and call Taboo. Split into equal teams and choose one of the teams to guess first. Pick a player to give clues to the rest of their team. Have someone on the other team stand behind to call Taboo or play a buzzer if they use a forbidden word.[1]
- Playing Taboo works best with 4 or more players.

2Describe as many words within the time limit without using any of the forbidden words. Start a 1-minute timer and have the person giving clues draw the top card. They can say anything to describe the top word as long as they don’t use any of the forbidden words listed below it.[2]
- If the clue giver says a forbidden word, the other team says “Taboo!” or buzzes them out.
- If the team guesses the word correctly, then the clue giver can draw another card.
- If a word is too hard or you don’t know what it is, you can skip it for a penalty of 1 point.

3Earn points for each word your team guessed correctly. Each word your team guessed correctly scores 1 point. However, any word that you skipped or got buzzed out on deducts 1 point for your team.[3]
