There’s no question that Bane has some of the best lines in 2012’s The Dark Knight Rises. He’s a sinister villain who’s Batman’s top nemesis in the movie. Some of Bane’s best quotes in The Dark Knight Rises highlight fear, power, pain, and control. His words hit deep and have chilling meanings behind them. Some of the villain’s most memorable lines include:

Bane says this line to Batman during their first confrontation. He wants Batman to know that his usually heroic tactics won’t be enough to defeat him.

“I didn’t see the light until I was already a man. And by then, it was nothing to me but blinding.” These lines are a continuation of Bane’s quote about Batman merely adopting the dark. They highlight the grim existence that Bane has lived and that drives his desire for chaos.

Bane speaks this line in his first scene in The Dark Knight Rises. His reference to the power behind his own mask marks an eerie comparison between him and Batman.
Bane says these words to the CIA agent who’s threatening to remove his mask. This moment undermines Bane’s unshakeable self-assurance and fearsomeness.
Bane speaks these words to the fugitive Doctor Pavel in the airplane scene. It foreshadows what’s to come for the doctor, while also showing how Bane isn’t affected by fear.
These words are said during an exchange between Bane and Batman. Bane lets Batman know that he’s the new leader of the League and plans to carry out Ra's al Ghul's mission.

Sometimes, Bane’s shortest lines pack the most punch. He says this right as he’s about to take over Gotham and unleash full chaos on the city.
Bane says this as he holds Bruce as a prisoner in “the Pit.” It reveals a bit about Bane’s existence in the Pit. It’s also Bane’s way of letting Bruce know that he can hope to climb out from the hole, but that it’ll be in vain.
Bane’s referring to himself as he says this after Daggett brings up his name. It’s a moment that establishes Bane’s dominance over Daggett and his acknowledgement of his own evil nature.

While Bane isn’t considered funny, this is a witty and humorous line given the context. During a stock exchange raid, a stockbroker tells Bane, “This is a stock exchange, there's no money you can steal!’ Bane replies with a great comeback that highlights the corruption of those in power.
Bane says this to Batman as the hero comes to fight for his city. In Bane’s eyes, there’s only one outcome for Batman.
Bane’s speech during the football stadium scene is one of the best moments in the movie. It spotlights Bane in all his twisted glory and shows what a clever and powerful villain he is.
Although Bane is corrupt himself, he hates the corruption caused by the elite. He aims to take these people off their high horses and humble them.

Bane’s mask is never really explained in TDKR. Although the mask is a vital part of Bane’s appearance, the film gives no backstory as to where it comes from or the exact purpose it serves. When asked about it, director Christopher Nolan has mentioned that it fills Bane’s body with a numbing agent to deal with pain from trauma the character endured at some point in his life. But, we never get an explanation of what the trauma was. It doesn’t matter, though, because the mask is still cool.^{[1]

Bane fears bats in the comics. If you’ve read the comics, then this detail comes as no surprise. Bane has a phobia of bats in the DC comics after being plagued by nightmares about them. This makes his rivalry with Batman all the more interesting. However, in The Dark Knight Rises, the villain is depicted as not fearing anything.^{[2]

Bane’s voice was inspired by boxer Bartley Gorman. When asked about what inspired the voice he used as Bane, Tom Hardy says he based it off of a boxer named Bartley Gorman. The actor says because Bane essentially has Latinx origins, he looked into the Latin concept and came across Bartley Gorman, who’s a Romani bare-knuckle fighter. Hardy was inspired by the boxer’s fearlessness and wanted to model Bane’s voice after him.^{[3]

Bane’s physique is supposed to be similar to the Hulk’s. In the DC comics, Bane is a huge guy and is supposed to be as big as the Hulk. When the villain is pumped up with a steroid known as Venom, he comes in at a whopping 350 pounds (5,600 oz). While Tom Hardy didn’t go to those lengths to gain weight for the role, he did put on 30 pounds (480 oz) to bulk up.^{[4]
