How do you find your birthday Pokémon?

To find your birthday Pokémon, write your birth date in MMDD format, and find the Pokémon with the same National Pokédex number. For example, if your birthday is January 30, that becomes the Dex number 0130, which matches with Gyarados. Divide the MMDD number in half if your birthday is after October 25.

How to Find Your Birthday Pokémon

Match your birth month and day to the Pokémon’s National Dex number. Write out your birthday in the MMDD format. Just read the digits from left to right, and search for the Pokémon with the matching National Pokédex number online (like by using Bulbagarden’s National Dex List). Congrats! Your birthday Pokémon is your new partner and may say something about your personality!
- Example: If your birthday is on March 3rd, write it out as 0303. Check the National Pokédex, and you’ll find that your birthday Pokémon is the Steel/Fairy-type Mawile!
  - Mawile has a large set of teeth on a small and cute body. It could mean you come off a little intimidating at first, but you’re actually sweet when people get to know you.
- If your birthday falls on the 1st through 9th of the month, write the date out in MMD format to get another birthday Pokémon!
  - Example: For a March 3rd birthday, write the date as 033, which corresponds to the Poison-type Nidorino. Its Pokédex entries say Nidorino is easily agitated and quick to attack, so maybe you’re a little bit feisty!^{[2]

If your birthday is after October 25th, halve the National Dex number. As of Generation IX, there are 1,025 Pokémon in the National Pokédex, so “official” birthday Pokémon only go up to October 25th. If you want to find a birthday Pokémon in the meantime, write the date in MMDD format and divide the number by 2. Then find the matching Pokémon in the Dex. If your birthday is on an odd-numbered day, you can round the number up or down to have 2 options!
- Example: If your birthday is December 19th, write it as 1219. When you divide 1219 by 2, it becomes 609.5, so you can choose between 609 or 610.
  - In the National Dex, #609 is the Ghost/Fire-type Chandelure. The Dex entries say Chandelure can hypnotize people, so you probably are able to draw and keep people’s attention.^{[3]

  - In the National Dex, #610 is the baby Dragon-type Axew. Axew has tusks that grow back stronger whenever they break, so you’re likely resilient and always looking to improve.^{[4]

- Gen X has been confirmed with Pokémon Winds and Pokémon Waves, releasing some time in 2027. It’s not confirmed how many new Pokémon are joining the National Pokédex, but there’s a chance they’ll add your birthday Pokémon.

Find the Pokémon that matches the day of the year as another method. If you count the extra one during a leap year, there are 366 days in a calendar year. Each of these numbers lines up with a Pokémon in the National Pokédex. Find the number of days from the start of the year to your birthday, making sure to include leap day (February 29). Then, look for the matching birthday Pokémon in the Dex.
- Example: If your birthday is on May 11, simply add up the days for January (31), February (29), March (31), April (30), and May (11). That tells you that May 11 is day #132 of the year. So, your birthday Pokémon is the Normal-type Ditto (#132 in the National Dex)!
  - Ditto can transform into anything, so you’re probably flexible and aren’t afraid of a little change.

Special in-game events for your birthday were introduced in Gen IV. Ever since Pokémon Diamond and Pearl were released, the game consoles and games track your birthday. When you play the game on your birthday, small moments happen in the game to help you celebrate.^{[5]

- In Generation IV, Lucas or Dawn will ask if it’s your birthday after you get into the Hall of Fame.
- In Generation V, you’ll receive a Toy Cake prop at the theater, the nurses at the Pokémon Center will remember your birthday, and mist on Routes 14 and 15 clears up.
- In Generation VI, a party popper goes off and confetti appears the first time you enter a Pokémon Center and it will display a cake on the screen behind the desk. In X and Y, diamond dust appears near Frost Cavern and your Poké Radar has a chance to play music that boosts your luck for catching shinies.
- In Generation VII, the Pokémon Center drops confetti and the nurse wishes you a happy birthday. Diamond dust also appears around Mount Lanakila.
- In Generation VIII, talk to the NPC by the Wedgehurst Pokémon Center to set your birthday. On your birthday, the Pokémon Centers surprise you with confetti and wish you a happy birthday. Any curry you make also has a birthday candle in your portion.
- In Generation IX, talk to one of the nurses in a Pokémon Center to set your birthday. When it’s your birthday, the Pokémon Center sprays confetti and wild Pokémon have a chance of having a Destiny Mark.

Mewtwo is the only Pokémon with a canonical birthday in the games. In Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, players can find journal entries inside the abandoned Pokémon Mansion on Cinnabar Island. The entries talk about researchers discovering Mew in a jungle. One entry notes that Mew gave birth on February 6th, and the researchers called the new Pokémon Mewtwo.^{[6]
